I am an oncology nurse in Oklahoma and am following a lead on a job with MD Anderson in Houston. I'm very interested but need some help. I've never even been to Houston, so tring to learn info about apartments and such is becoming more difficult. I'll be doing some travel to other centers within the "Medical Center" area and would idealy like to find a condo or townhome within that area. I have dogs (very small) that will be going with me, so an apartment would be my second choice of living, but we can make it work if everything is right. I could really use some help with any info that would help me find a nice place to live. It's just me and my dogs, so size isn't important to me, I just want to find a nice, and most importantly safe place to live.
Thanks so much in advance with the help.

I grew up in Houston and my grandmother was treated at MD Anderson. I have the highest respect for that facility and if I were living back in Houston today, wouldn't want to work anywhere else in the city. A great hospital with some amazing docs. I miss the city from time to time, but don't think I could take the humidity after living here where it's rarely over 20% humidity! Be careful of some of the places downtown (safety-wise). I lived off of Richmond, near the cross street of Westheimer and although it was okay, it wasn't the greatest place. If you want, PM with some of the places you are looking at and I can tell you if they are decent or not. It's hard for me to think of any off the top of my head. I lived in a town just NE of the city called Humble/Atascocita and it was a nice, safe area. Reasonable cost of living and lots of places to shop and eat. It was only about a 25 minute drive into town, but that may have changed with the growing population. Good luck on getting the job...you will love MD Anderson.

The homes outside of the beltway are beautiful homes and reasonably priced, but you pay with commute time into the city.
Inside the city, I recommend living inside of the 610 loop. Its that first loop around Houston that you see on the map, the second loop is the beltway.
Inside the loop, you'll find some nice condos, but you'll pay the price for them. (please someone correct me if I am wrong).
I have a very nice apartment in the Heights area, and it takes me 15-20 min to get to the med center for work, due to all of the stoplights.
Houston is really a great place to live - I moved here in September of 2005, I get lost constantly, its hot, and tons of traffic, but its a really nice place to live as long as you find a good area. I'd recommend coming down and driving around to places, just to get a feel for the city. You can mostly tell by the looks of things whether or not its a safe place to live.
Good luck!
