Posey bed for a hip fracture

How safe is it to use a posey bed for a hip fracture before surgery? You can't get the person in there without ending up hurting them. That tiny window? Doesn't work when the guy is six foot or taller. Even with angling, the guy still ended up in pain.

I don't know much about the guy. I was just helping to transfer him but he did have a painful hip fracture. There seems like it would have to have some way to unzip the bed farther to get him in like a normal transfer.

It does not seem safe.

The Poseys that we use unzip all the way around - that one does seem like it might be kind of tricky. What was the rationale for him being in a posey? I really hate Poseys, but sometimes they are really the best answer for confused, injured patients that just won't stay in bed.

These were utilized at a sub acute I worked for; they used it for their Neuro/TBI unit.

There are poseys that do extend for tall people; at least 6 ft tall; can't remember the inches, though.

I am sure positioning had to be painful and a challenge to prevent further complications.

I think the issue was he was trying to get up. A house sup that was floating to the ER said that the posey bed was not suitable for him given the height and age and he should have been one on one. I think the issue was we were slammed with admits and they couldn't get nurses to come in.

I thought it unzipped at the top, but the nurses said it didn't. Although some of the nurses didn't know where it unzipped. I guess the beds used to be white covers instead of the green ones. I don't know if it unzipped all the way around.

I remember the nurse warning me that the patient would try to undress on the way up there.

Posey beds can serve a purpose, but you have to have the right size/access.

It looks like a crib or a cage. We would NEVER be allowed to use one of these in a SNF in Massachusetts. Horrible.
