Pomeroy College of Nursing

Published

Hello I have submitted an application to the Evening/Weekend RN program at Pomeroy College of Nursing in Syracuse, NY. I am wondering if anyone else has applied to the program. The program starts Spring 2017 (January) and is 18 months long. I can't wait to receive an admission decision. I look forward to hearing from graduates of the program, current students, and prospective candidates.

I am so nervous to take this placement exam. I know most nursing school require an exam but when I first applied, I thought the placement exam would be required if and only after someone was accepted and enrolled into the school because, well that's what a placement exam is but I have since been told they use it as part of their decision making process. I wish we had some sort of hospital-sponsored RN program here in Rochester. I like to plan ahead so I am already looking into colleges that offer a MSN degree specifically geared towards RN's that have a bachelor's degree in a non-nursing field. I want to ultimately become a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). I know Frontier Nursing University has a program.

I got an 85%. I am not a great test taker either and I get nervous and move too fast (hence why I was done in a little over an hour...) Upstate has fast track to MSN if you already have a previous bachelors. The woman who I had my interview with told me more about it, but it's also on upstate's website. I wouldn't be nervous for the exam! Just study practice questions. It's basic! It also has a "critical thinking" score and my critical thinking score was higher than my actual score.

The woman I interviewed with (janice) at Crouse really emphasized how important it was that I had earned a degree. She told me it shows that I have a lot of experience that led me to pursue nursing. I also finished all of my pre reqs, minus micro which I am in now.

85% seems like a pretty awesome score, especially if the average for their admitted student is 69%. Looking at the test and what it will include, I think I will do well. While I know a lot of nursing programs has pre reqs, Pomeroy/Crouse doesn't have any pre reqs right? You just won't have a large course load like everyone else, right? Of the courses I completed in my previous degree, only a few are apart of their curriculum and they are all liberal arts courses but that's another thing I like about this program is that I will be able to complete alot of the courses (A&P, Micro, etc.) right in the program.

thanks! I'm sure you'll do great. And yes, you're right. My degree only took care of sociology, English, and psych. I know how overwhelmed i get so I decided to take A&P1 and 2, developmental psych online, and I'm in micro now. But yes, I think without taking those courses, the full course load is something like 18.5 hours

When was the deadline for the weekday program? Did they ever get back to you about your interest in applying to the evening/weekend program? If you're accepted, I am sure they won't mind switching you from the weekday program to the evening/weekend program. One thing that is kind of uncomfortable is not knowing exactly how their evening/weekend program will be scheduled. In speaking to the staff there, they told me that there will rarely be weekend classes or clinicals and that a majority of classes and clinicals will take place during the weekday starting at 4pm and 3pm respectively. I am a fan of St. Joe's evening/weekend schedule in that its every Wednesday night and every other weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun). Coming from Rochester, I will have to modify my work schedule to fit around my class schedule at Crouse. I''m thankful that I have a decent-paying part time job at a local cancer center. I'm hoping they will help pay for some of my tuition.

I work full time but have the ability to stop working and I will be living with my parents. I know I learn better consistently going to classes so that's why I wouldn't mind Crouse's weekday schedule. My mom actually went to St. Joe's and loved it, but Crouse is cheaper. It is difficult to not know how Crouse's weekend schedule is set up... I didn't even think about the schedule not being up on their website!

Bcgirl47, had you already taken your placement exam before you were invited to an interview or are they something that's done concurrently (i.e. We know you have your placement exam scheduled for ... but can you come in for an interview?)?

I just scheduled my placement exam for 9/29. The extended deadline for the evening/weekend program is 9/30 but they have a placement test date set for 9/29 so I took it so I could have more time to study but I wonder when the interviews will be for the evening/weekend program.

I had already taken my test and got a letter about a week later inviting me for an interview. I also got an email yesterday staying that applications were being reviewed for my program

Thanks! I got an e-mail yesterday saying that applications were being reviewed for the evening/weekend program as well. I wonder if they will call and invite applicants to an interview as opposed to sending out letters because I would think they need to get them done fairly quickly. The woman I spoke to said they hope to get out acceptance letters by the end of October. I really hope that I get accepted. #FingersCrossed... It's so funny all the anxiety we have to go through just to get in a problem which of course is only the beginning of a rigorous process to becoming a nurse. My ultimate goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner, then get a Doctorate in Nursing Practice and teach somewhere while I continue being a RN/NP... What's your aspirations?

I'm not sure! Want to get through school first but I'll be for sure continuing my education. I've been looking into CRNA programs...

ps! I got my acceptance letter today! YAY!

Wow!!! Congratulations!!! I am so excited for you!! I am still working to get all of my transcripts and references in. I hope to have them in by the end of next week, then I have the admissions test on 9/29 so I imagine I won't know either way until the end of October. You must be excited and maybe even a bit anxious.
