Pointless to apply before taking a&p 1&2?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

So at my school (which is pretty small) you can apply for the nursing program before your pre reqs are finished. You just have to be done with them before you start your first nursing course. The pre-reqs are a&p 1 and 2. I am taking a&p 1 in the spring and a&p 2 in the summer. Anyways I won't even be finished with a&p 1 by the application deadline of may 1st. I have straight a's so far in my other courses (I'm taking biology). Is it pointless to apply this year? Or is anyone else's school like this?

Also this year 485 applied and only 72 actually made it into the program. So, realistically I'm more than likely going to have to wait until the year after next I am guessing?

If the application of may 1 is to start in August and you will be done by them, I would go for it. If you know you won't be, then wait.

I would just do the application. Just bust your butt in a & p 1 & 2 so you can finish in time :)

As long as your school doesn't charge a fee for the application, I would apply every semester until you get in. I was very close to not applying for the program that I just got accepted to (starting in January) because I had a C+ in A&P 1 and I was planning on retaking it to raise the grade. Well, they changed the selection criteria to only accept TEAS V (in the past semesters they allowed TEAS IV as long as it was taking before a certain date) and the number of applicants dropped from over 300 to under 150 for 136 seats. From what I understand the TEAS V was much more difficult than TEAS IV so not as many people were able to apply (I only took V and it kicked my rear end so I can't say anything). So, due to this it lowered the "cutoff" which was a great benefit to me.

Bottom line, it doesn't hurt to try. You never know what will be the deciding factor and if you end up not applying and find out that someone else with the exact same criteria as you got in and you didn't even try I'm sure that you will be mad! So just do it!

Good luck :)

I wouldn't say it's pointless. But you should ask the admissions office directly about this (e.g. How many accepted students have A&P or pre-reqs done). I went to an info session once, and the admissions flat out said if you don't have A&P and Micro done then you have close to 0% chance getting in (even though none of those classes are pre-reqs). It's basically because a huge number of applicants have them done already.
