Nurses Recovery

Published

A while back I found a list of common household products and medications to avoid while in monitoring programs, I saved it to my pc, however since then my computer crashed and I've lost the document. I've been searching for it and can't seem to locate it here on the site, can someone help me locate it?? My RMA begins the first of June, thanks in advance.

I wasn't able to find the list you're looking for (I know the one and when I find it I'll post it). But here is a link to the Talbott Recovery Campus' guide to safe medication use while in recovery. It's in PDF format.

Thanks, Jack!

I even searched hi and lo on your site, just in case I found it there. I'm not having any luck, I know it was an extensive list.

i'm having a devil of a time finding the list. when i do i'll post the link here and then also on my web site. in the mean time, here's a couple of interesting tidbits regarding alcohol:

meats cooked with alcohol

meats prepared with alcohol added at the end of the cooking time retain 85 percent of the alcohol, the usda reports. typical examples of dishes made with added alcohol include veal marsala, made with marsala wine added in the last few minutes of cooking. other examples of foods cooked with alcohol include marinated meats and stews. while cooking for a longer time does eliminate more alcohol, foods marinated in alcohol retain 70 percent of the alcohol content. it takes 2.5 hours of simmering to reduce the alcohol content down to 5 percent in stews, according to the usda.

flambé

foods flamed with alcohol appear to have all the added alcohol burned off, but the food actually still retains 75 percent of the added alcohol, the usda warns. any flambéed meat or dessert will still contain alcohol.

Thanks for that information, Jack. ETOH was never my DOC but I am subject to the dreaded ETG test for alcohol. It is so sensitive that I am hypervigilant about what I eat. (I hope it is obvious that I don't drink anything with alcohol in it, lol)

I have always doubted that whole "the alcohol always cooks off" excuse because I can taste it in some foods that have been cooked. Recently, I ate part of a piece of cake at my bridge club and could taste alcohol in the frosting. Needless to say, I stopped eating it immediately & even spit out what I had in my mouth (discreetly of course).

I know my compliance monitor would never believe me if I tested positive for something.

Is it true energy drinks will cause false positive?

yes because of the large amounts of caffeine can cause you to test pos for stimulants.

Waldo,

I think you and I are in the same program. I have been in 16mos and honestly, all I have changed is I don't drink alcohol(my DOC) or eat foods I know are prepared with or contain alcohol. I don't read the fine print ingredients on boxes, I don't use OTC meds that contain alcohol, but I never did anyway. I have always used alcohol free mouthwash.

I still use hand sanitizer at work, hairspray, hair coloring, body spray, deodorant. I cook with vanilla extract when the recipe calls or it. I use air freshening sprays in my home and several different cleaning products.

I get tested for ETG with every uds. I have never had a problem. I decided at the beginning of my contract that I wasn't going to get nuts about the uds'. I had read alot of horror stories about nurses testing positive after incidental exposures and it scared the carp out of me. I just don't drink, stay in recovery, do what I need to do, and I don't sweat it. I imagine that the test allows for a certain level of incidental exposure.

I don't know about the energy drinks, I don't like them. I do drink ALOT of strong coffee somedays and then tested without issue....I can't imagine caffiene would cause you to test positive for stimulants.

You will be fine.:nurse:

I agree about the large amount of caffeine not being a problem. I drink a lot of super strong coffee every day and it has not been an issue. True confession: This is my DOC now :p To relax, my DOC is swimming long distances at my gym. Works for me. :D

Catmom,

You are not alone...True confession number 2..caffeine is also my DOC now..I figure, I gave up smoking 30 years ago. I gave up drinking ETOH almost 12 years ago, I gave up drugs (opiates and benzo's) 2 and 1/2 years ago....I damn sure am not giving up my coffee;) They will have to pry that cup from my cold dead hands!

I stopped all drugs of abuse (except caffeine, lol) on Dec 8, 2004. Stopped compulsive gambling on Dec 22 of that year. I'm hanging onto the coffee, though. I'm with you on that one diva rn :yeah:
