Specializes in Psych (25 years), Medical (15 years).

In the days when cell phones looked like lunch boxes, and staff that needed to be contacted at any time wore pagers, a very good supervisor told his staff, "When you walk through that door (to the unit), leave your personal life outside of that door. When you're here, you're 'on'- here for the patient".

There is intra and internet access on the unit for our jobs. Smartphones are an unnecessary distraction.

e (we are prohibited from using smart phones for patient care. We can use apps, but cannot text patient information, no matter how veiled the ID is)

I see more inappropriate use of phones than use to enhance patient care. 90% vrs 10% It's too easy to get distracted by personal texts, where we used to wait until break before making a call.

Personal smart phone use is not allowed in patient care areas in my local hospital.
