Quick background:

My husband (the self-employed cable installer) injured his knee. I took him to the ER, received xray (no broken bones), discharged & referred to orthopedist. We don't have insurance & he had to pay out of pocket for 2 doctor's visits and an MRI. We are out of money w/ no income (I'm a nrsing student). Results show he has torn cartilage and needs surgery. We have no way to pay for it. We've applied for medicaid but that takes up to 45 days to process. The doctor will do a payment plan but wants $5000 up front (which we can't even afford groceries). My husband can't even walk. He's on crutches. Can't work and can't help around the house.

My question:

If we take him to the bigger and better hospital (Tampa General) and he tells them what's going on and that he's having persistant pain, cannot walk, swelling, etc. , do you think they'd go ahead and do the arthroscopic surgery on an ER admit w/o insurance?

If not, how do you suggest we go about resolving this? We have 2 kids, I'm a fulltime student, he was our only source of income, and we have no insurance. We need serious help!!!

I find this incredible that we have illegals coming across our borders and the hospitals have to take them, They do not have to pay, yet here is a citizen (I assume) who is in dire need and no one to help. This is a horrible sign of the times in America! Is there a county hospital in your area that treats has to treat everyone? I hope someone out there can help this family!!!!!

I cannot believe you have a 45 days wait period. "Force" this issue if you have to. This may not be life-threatening, but it isn't exactly a 'wait and see' surgery either.

If I had a choice of paying back the thousands this will cost or pushing a little harder to have Medicaid cover - well you know!

You'll be a working nurse soon (emphasize "working") and your 'pay back' to the system will be for the next 25 years. Go for it and good luck to you.

I was injured when I was a student in college and had to get sent to the ER. I got the bill and I had no idea on how I was going to pay for this. I mean, I am a student! No job, nothing. So I went to the hospital and I talked to someone (I am sorry I don't remember what department) and she told me that every hospital has money set aside for "free care". The ambulance and ER visit were covered under free care and all I had to do was show them my paycheck for the last 5 weeks or so. At the time I was working like 10 hours a week so obviously not making much. Anyways, I hope everything turns out well with you.

This really tells people about the importance of insurance. Try to at least have some with a hugh deductible on the wage earner. I'm so sorry for you all. Do you have family members that could help you? How far are you in your nursing program? Awful things happen and you might have to quit for a while and go to work. At least talk to the hospital. I don't think that anyone would give you loans while no one is working. Good luck and God bless.
