PLEASE HELP...Need feedback on TX hospitals!!!

Hello Everyone,

I'm trying desperately...well maybe not desperately...but pretty hard...:) ..to find out recent information on the following hospitals. I have already received some information...but would like additonal feedback, so I can hopefully make a good decision. I have the websites...but personal experience is the best kind of information to have when you're traveling. Like how the staffing is, whether or not they treat agency or travelers well, good management..etc, etc. And I would like to hear any warnings...you might be incline to give also..:)

The hospitals are as follows: Plaza Medical Ctr/tele/PCU in Ft. Worth, Tx

Denton Regional Hospital- PCU, in Denton, Tx..:) I'm really interested in hearing about this one!

Memorial Southwest in Houston- tele, in Houston, TX,- this one is really last on my list.

Medical City in Dallas, Tx, not sure of unit...but anything you can tell me would be helpful. This one is third to last on my list.

Richland Hills-PCU in N. Richland Hill, TX, Or this one is also at the top of my list.

Valley Baptist - ICU/tele..not sure about this one either. This one is second to last on my list.

Also would like to hear from anyone who knows of some good, traveler friendly hospitals in Northern AZ...yeah...I might still go or in NM...

I plan to end up by the end of the year in N. Cali...above Sacramento, so if anyone knows any place there they would reccomend...I would sure be interested in hearing from you..

Please take a little time to respond..as it would be of great help to me. Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give..

Sorry you lost the Denton job as i think you would have liked it up there...nice little town (college town... Texas Women's University is there with a good nursing program, so lots of students around.:) They have trouble getting agency to drive up from my area, so keep your eyes open...they use a lot of travelers. :)

Between Plaza and North Hills, North Hills is my fave. Their tele unit has a 5:1 ratio and a very busy unit...they have non titrating drips and rarely have sheaths...hearts don't go out there til ambulatory and stable..rarely do they have any invasive lines like alines out there. Mostly medsurg on monitors, etc. with higher acuity types. You do have a free charge nurse and a monitor tech which is nice...the charge is free to be a resource so that will be nice for a traveler.

I kinda gave you my take on Plaza...the acuity is higher on their PCU/Tele units and I feel the workload is greater at Plaza....plus they like to float prn/agency around.....maybe you don't mind this; depends on what you like to work with. There's lots of fun things to do in the Dallas Fort Worth area...you won't get bored!

If I can help with any more info, feel free to email. I've lived in this area 20 years and have worked agency or staff at most facilities :)

Thanks so much for all your imput Mattsmom..:)! I think I would also like Denton, and my recruiter has said that something still might come through there. So I will wait another week and see.

N. Richland Hills sounds exactly like the one I just came from, except better pt ratios....because there the ratio was 7 and even 8:1 many times on 7p to 7a and even 7a to 7p. Also very busy unit! And I'm very exp dealing with A lines...so no problem there. But I really prefer a small town, and so does my daughter. And I really don't care for med/surg/tele either. I don't like floating after 4hrs..and never have! Not a good way to provide continually of care in my book!

I do like the idea of being close to Dallas/Ft. Worth...and felt Denton would have been perfect!

All of these positons are on nites...as I rarely do days! I did email you, but it was thru my yahoo.com address....so not sure if you got it...as it's not under Brownms46. Let me know, and I will email again..:) Thanks for being sooo very helpful..

Is there anyone who works at Childrens Medical Center? I believe it's in the Dallas area?

Love always

Megan

hey there,

if your'e interested in traveling up the coast form corpus... utmb at galveston is probably the BEST hospital i've ever worked in. the pat ratio is GREAT!! pay is good, the people are so nice!! i worked in renal transplant and the core staff always give the travelers and agency people the lightest easiest pt load...can you believe that???? andd everyone was sooo friendly. i'm in sw florida now and HATE it!!! can't wait to go back to galveston.

I'm sorry Cowgirl,

But I don't do Peds...as I don't like sticking kids, having them look at me in fear, because of something I might have to do them that isn't pleasant. But I do admire those who care for our children. I hope someone can answer your question though..:).

My partner and I are also thinking of moving to the Denton area, her family is there. Anyone know of jobs in the Denton, Dallas, Forth Worth area in Family Planning, STD's or L/D??? We have an opportunity to live rent free. It would be a great way to save some money, then move back to New England area after a year.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Brownie!

I worked at Medical City Dallas Hospital in the NICU for over 10 years and saw it go downhill rapidly. I thought that agency nurses were often hung out to dry and left to their own defenses all too often. Now, as an agency nurse, I can say that I always have a 3 or 4 baby assignment that often can be considered the assignment from Hell! Nursing in The D/FW area, at least in the NICU, is no bed of roses. I haven't worked at any of the other hospitals you mentioned so I can't offer any words of wisdom regarding their work environments. All I can say regarding any HCA hospital is to enter at your own risk and be very assertive when accepting assignments. Good Luck! Personally, I would work in Arizona. I really like it there!

Browns, if you've got a sense of adventure and an open mind, give my place a try! We're a warm-hearted little community hospital in the big city of San Antonio, with a working-class population that often really appreciates the care that we give. We're forward thinking, progressive (if financially challenged) and really want to be the best healthcare team on earth. Now if we could just fill our empty slots with Allnurse nurses...:)

:chuckle...JeannieM...wouldn't that be a wonderful place to go to work? Not that it would be perfecft...but we have some people we know care...or they wouldn't be as wonderful as they are, to all who have been in need at one time or another..:D.

But fortuantely or unfortunately...I waited too long to make up my mind about one of the assignments I wanted In Denton, and it was gone by the time I did decide...:o. But I have accepted an assignment in Scottsdale, Az...(yeah I know...HOT...:chuckle). But hopefullly I will survive. :)

Thank you JeannieM for the offer...as it was wonderful of you to think of it...

Brownie, enjoy Arizona and keep us in the back of your mind. Work on that tan! There's a lot of beautiful landscape around there as well, and some neat hiking! Take care of yourself and keep us posted on how the assignment is working out. JeannieM :kiss

My hometown! Whoo-hoo! :) Fiestatime is the BEST! And Christmas on the Riverwalk. Hey Jeannie, please send me some bean tamales! They've never heard of them here in NM, believe it or not!

Galveston IS a dirty city....but I still like it because it has 'charm.' Really! If you consider it I hope you can handle the Mardi Gras celebrations every year....gets pretty wild with the college students (plus the Spring Break crowd) and everything.
