I have a question for anyone living and working in Canada. I have a friend who is a Rn and her so called husband to be has just told her that after many months of soul searching he has decided to move to Canada. He is from Africa and is here in the US with a Alien registration (im not sure if that is right but he is not a offical citizen but has a nursing license here in Texas). He says that the economy is so bad in Canada and their census is dropping with many people choosing to live and work in the US because of the better pay. He was told by someone up there they have a program that if he moves there by a set time (determined by the Canadian Gov) he can become and offical citizen, get on welfare and have housing and some other things provided for him. The main reason however, is that he was told he could move his family from Africa and they could become citizens as well (having all the benifits) with little or no trouble. This man just layed this junk on my friend all of a sudden.. goodbye Im leaving, hope you understand this is for my family. So Im looking for information to see if someone knows if Canada has some type of program like this or he is just misinformed. He may be moving to timbuk2 with another woman, but my friend is just beside herself and I promised I would ask. Thank you in advance.
Sounds like this guy might have obtained his information from an 'immigration specialist". Run, don't walk away from anyone who tells you the system is easy in Canada, they usually say this only to get unsuspecting potential immigrants to hand over lots of cash and then dissapear with their money. As previous posters have said it is getting harder and harder to immigrate and 'just go on welfare'.
Ghost, you are right, if you can get a work permit with a temp liscense you can work. I'm just too cheap to pay for both. The medical has been the most time consuming thing for me. The exam was different from the NCLEX, the questions were more along the lines of therapuetic communication and not so much about procedure and pharmacy. Of course safety is a major area for both tests. I suggest you get the CRNE prep guide. I have been out of school a long time but I did fine. Hope it goes well for you, good luck!
Hello there!! I am a Romanian nurse awaiting Canadian Embassy's decision regarding my work visa. I got the job offer and the Labour Market Opinion from Canada but don't know what to expect from the Embassy before they will send me for medicals. Can you share more of your experience or other pple's.. you may know others in the same situation. Also, what should I expect from the interview at the Embassy?
Thanx in advance for yr reply!
Holy Mackeral!! Where does this guy get his info?? I have taught the course for foreign trained nurses. Hate to break it to him but as an LVN he doesn't have a leg to stand on. No fast track here. RN's from non-english countries have had a heck of a time getting their licences here. One woman was from Somalia but had trained in Switzerland. It took her 2 years to get her English up to where it needed to be, then she worked as an orderly while getting her RPN (LVN) license. She is still not up to an RN yet and she has the papers to prove all of it. She arrived in Canada 6 years ago. If this guy got his LVN in the US he would still have to spend a year in school after getting his residency status. If he got it in Africa, it would be easier to start from scratch. They are working on speading up the process for RN's and Doctors, engineers and other trades, but the LVN is not a huge priority at the moment.

If your friend's intended-husband probably applies for political asylum in the US. It will take him 5-7 years to get Green card, another 5-6 years to get Citizenship, then he could apply for his family. Based on the quota system, it will take another 5-15 years for his parents/sibling to come depending on which county he is originally from. So if he stays in the US, together it will take 15 - 30 years for his siblings to come, and 10+ years for his parents to come.
Besides, he could not go back to his home country to visit his family since he applies political asylum.
Probably that's why he wants to move to Canada.
