i've dealt with plantar fasciitis for years. several different podiatrists have each assured me that it is not a shoe problem. any shoe i wear is ok as long as it is comfortable and i keep arch supports inside them. overweight contributes to the problem. expensive custom arch supports can be made or off the shelf ones can be purchased for $25.

This isn't a long-term solution, and most of you probably know about it already. That said, I've gotten really good relief by freezing a half-full water bottle and rolling it back and forth under my foot. I learned the hard way not to wear plastic garden clogs full time--but they were LIME GREEN and absolutely garishly tacky! I STILL love those shoes!
I also like arch-support socks. I have some by Keds and some by NurseMates. They don't completely stop my feet from hurting at the end of the day, but I notice a difference on days I don't wear them. Some relief is better than no relief!

I wear New Balance. However, the thing that helps me the most is exercises. I flex and extend my feet BEFORE getting out of bed. Then I stand with my hands on a wall, one leg in front of the other, and do a knee bend till I feel the stretch (not too far!). This keeps the tendons loose and has eliminated visits to the MD. Also, I go to Curves 3 x week and that exercise makes a difference as well.
