Plan B: Changing Majors?

Published

So to all the fellow friends I've made here, I've been rejected to all three nursing programs I applied to (USF/SFSU/CSUEB) :crying2:. It's only my first time, but it's very disappointing, and I feel like I worked so hard this past two years and have just hit a dead end. :banghead:

Anywho, case in point is, by the end of this semester, I'll be done with my GE's and nursing pre-reqs. This summer I'm planning on volunteering at a local hospital to build up some experience in the medical environment, and just get have some sort of idea as to what I'm getting in to. :chuckle In the fall, I'll basically be applying to all the CSU's [that I'm eligible for], a few private colleges, and maybe out of state if I have to for next Spring, hopefully being able to even get into ONE with all this competition. :uhoh21: My greatest fear is that I will be denied yet again, and I don't want to waste an entire year doing nothing. It's even tougher because I have so much pressure from my parents to do well and I will be the first grandchild on my mom's side to graduate from college and the second on my dad's side, and everyone is expecting so much from me! :uhoh3:

To my dismay, I hear stories of people waiting two, sometimes three years just to get into nursing programs :uhoh3:. After much contemplation after my third (and final) rejection :zzzzz, I was thinking about getting a BS in Microbiology, while I wait to get into clinicals. If my nightmare does happen and I don't make it into the NS the second time around, I will at least have been studying and working towards something. & don't get me wrong, I DO want to be a nurse, but there's not much more I can do if I they just won't let me in, but recently, I've been very interested in Microbiology; I think it would lay a good foundation for me in the specifics of the particular field I am interested in. BUT, if by chance, I get called into the NS, I would take it, and perhaps finish the Micro degree later, or vice versa. What do you guys think? Am I aiming too high?

I know I'm still young (19 turning 20 this August ) but I'm ready to start working :typing and helping people!

I'm right there with you....I'm an alternate so I really don't know if I'm going to get into my program or not, but I know that I need to start thinking of plan B. My last year's plan B was the CNA thing but that really has not helped at all, lol! Seriously, I've had my CNA for a year now and after the millions of resumes/applications I've sent, I haven't received a single call back. And it was about $1500 for the program and 6 weeks that I wasted!! I'm not sure what I am going to do for plan B. Julz, the micro thing sounds awesome for you. You will work it out and in the end you'll look back and think, wow, this was exactly how it was supposed to go! Sometimes our best laid plans fail but give way to better and more exciting things later on....we just don't know it until we're there!

Now, I've got to go start taking my own advice!!!!

Did you look into doing home health care with the CNA certification? I know home health care doesn't excite most people :) but it is a way to get patient contact experience. Just my :twocents:. You've probably already thought of that...

How come I never get any "sweetie" professors?

As for texting in class ... put me in the section with the professors that go crazy - I find it beyond irritating. I have some girls at my table that are constantly texting - the entire class period. Click, click, click. Then they giggle about the responses they get. Very distracting. I get to wondering what is so funny, what is so interesting?

You can bet that when the instructors looks over at me - there I am - eyes on them, totally focused (even if I am daydreaming!) not fiddling. And you know what? I get a different grade than those girls - even when we have just about the same answers sometimes! I don't think that is just about me paying attention, either, it is about the instructor knowing who is paying attention and who is being rude.

I have had instructors tell the students they will be asked to leave if they choose to text in their class. One instructor even went so far as to tell the class, "Don't even think about texting in my class or you will fail." Alrighty then!

He's probably only a sweetie because he hasn't been teaching for too long! Give him a few more years...

Most of my profs pretty much go ballistic when they either notice someone texting or someone's cellphone buzzes. I don't think when someone is texting they realize how much that tap, tap, tap can be heard!! But to me it sounds really loud.

I'm like you. When I'm in class, the cellphone is OFF completely and I face the teacher. Who just happens to look at me when s/he asks a question of the class. So hey, I'll take the Brownie Points. Goodness knows I don't have a hot body on my side!!! :lol2:

This is a true story: For me, the cellphone is a necessary evil that I use as little as possible. I never text. Ever. Ever. I don't know how to text and I'm not interested in learning. If I want to speak with someone, I'll pick up the phone and call them. But I understand that lots of people love it, and for today's youngsters, it's what they grew up with. So one day my hubby decides to text me. Even though I told him never to text me because I can't figure out how to retrieve and then erase the message! This day, I do figure out how to retrieve the message, after calling my number and first being puzzled that I had no new voicemail, despite the little envelope appearing on my phone. So I called my husband and I said, "What does "I LESS THAN THREE YOU" mean?" He burst out laughing and told me to look at it again. Then I got it!

I suppose one of these days I'll have to get good at texting, since everyone seems to prefer it these days....

I'm so sorry! I know how frustrating it is to feel like your just "waiting around." I have on;y a few classes to go on my pre-req's (YAY!), but then I won't start nursing school until a year after I apply (Fall '09). That is, if I get in...

Anyway, in the meantime I'm finishing up a second Associates Degree (since I took so many classes to get into the ASN program) and volunteering at the hospital. I have considered taking a CNA class, but with school and a young child, and volunteer work, I really don't think I can squeeze it in.

If I don't get into nursing school for Fall '09, I'm going into Respiratory Therapy; I'm applying to that program at the same time.

I don't think you are aiming to high, considering Microbiology. I would give you a good foundation to just about any health career and may even open up new possibilities! Good luck!

Only 30? Wow!! My school starts out 90-100 in each class.

I'm looking into Humboldt too, and according to their website they only take 30 students BUT only 150 applied to the program last year. With some extra credit stuff you can actually get into it with a 3.5 (which is my overall GPA, hence the interest). Plus the Eureka coast is an awesome place if you're a scenery lover :D

i know you applied for nursing school but i was just wondering if you were still working on your pre reqs.

...me? :uhoh21:

I'm finishing Micro and OChem this semester

Random question: Does anyone know an accredited online college where I could take physics, chemistry or biology? All the courses I want to take at three different community colleges ALL overlap. What are the odds huh...

I never text either. I'm one of these that's lucky to remember to charge the battery on my cell phone...I guess it's just not important enough to my existence.

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting and for the friends I've made on here, keep in touch and tell me how the program is! I will probably still check back on the forums from time to time even if I decide not to take the nursing route :chuckle
