I have just been accepted for a 3 year Diploma in Nursing. It is a
real headache trying to organise childcare for my kids. Could anyone give me some idea how many days and hours I would be working while on placement ? I am trying to work out the amount of care needed and just as importantly the cost.
Anyone have any tips or thoughts on this subject?
Is it possible to get away with using after school clubs while at Uni?
TIA
Mrs Bear.

On placement i did 37.5 hrs a week. I had a choice to cover that by doing either 3 long days or 5 short shifts week. Long days worked for me as had 3 young children and a hubby. I was really lucky though as my mom looked after my boys and took them to school etc. It is very difficult studying ,placements and assignments but if u want to be a nurse it is worth it. I got through it and have been qualified as a staff nurse now for almost 12 mths. So good luck :)

I'm not quite sure what you're asking when you say "placement." I am a Freshman in a Diploma program, and our clinicals are during regular school hours. I don't know what they will be next year, though.
I hope you find the answer you're looking for. Good luck!

Where I am we have to do 260 placement hours a semester, but some of them can be counted as theory hours, like if were learning how to do sertain skills in the class. But usually its around 250ish.
Our shifts are meant to be 7hrs long, but it depends where you are because some times you do more or less. Or if you do a night itd be more. And we usually get one day off a week.
I think that the NMC rules are that in the first year you have to do about 780 or something? But it might vary uni to uni?
Hope that made sence!Good Luck! What uni are you going to?
Thank you for your replies, at least I now know how many hours I will need child care.
I am going to be studying at Brighton and Sussex University.

Im just going into my 2nd year now. Dont know if this will be any help but here goes!..........
I have to do 37.5 hrs a week, and on a ward this usually the equivilant to- 4 shifts- early (7-3) or late (1.30-9.30) and one 4hr shift, (8-12) Remaining hrs make up a half day that we are given as part of private study.
As for long days, i think you can do these upon request and they're usually 7-9.30.
Hope this makes sense ( ) and helps with your childcare arrangements! :)

Im Starting My 3rd Year Now And My Course Is 7weeks In & Out.until End Of 2nd Year Students Had To Work 37.5hrs Although 2.5hrs Were Allocated To Study. My Last Placement My Hours Were Reduced To 30 (winner) But Now I Have Heard Rumours That We R Changing Again Back To 37.5hrs, Thats Not Really Fair Is It. I Tell U Its A Heck Of A Lot Of Work Esp When U Have 2 R 3 Assignmentsat The Same Time

I am half way through my third year and I do 37.5 hours over TWO weeks, rather than doing block placements at uni,or a ward, I spen three days a week on week at the hospital, and the other two in uni, and the next week two days on the ward and three at uni.
I gets realy confusing, and it is awkward for me to fit my bank shifts in. Next semester (my final one) I do a long placement on the wards with only one day a month in uni.
Not sure if that helps, I think each uni has their own system, and it might be worth considering contacting them, or a current student to find out the situation.

life isnt fair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its a heck of a lot better than when I trained... we worked a 40 hr week - days off when the sister said (as long as you got 2 days off in 7, they could be any 2) and weekends.. what were they???? our time in school was in blocks of 2 weeks. we worked our tails off....
Not sure it gets any better........ I did my nurse practitioner degree in my own time, paying for childcare and travel, but at least my degree was funded! In general practice you rarely get training or education in practice time, its usually your time and no, we dont get refunded travel costs.
welcome to the real world of nursing!
