Pinning ceremonies...

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

Hi - quick question about guys and pinning ceremonies. Don't mean to offend anyone, but pinning ceremonies (pins, Nightingale lamps, etc.) don't seem very oriented towards the male gender. Do male grads feel goofy at these ceremonies? How silly will I look? My wife is already busting my chops about carrying a lamp, etc...

wow! i just read all the posts and now i am just sick!!!!!!! when will it end? i currently work in surgery as a cst and already see things like this. you should see the tote bags i got for christmas for the past 2 years! there is nothing neutral sexual in a tote bag.

this having been said; there is nothing neutral sexual in a capping or lantern lighting ceremony. the pinning itself, i can live with. i will do the other ceremonies if i have to but, why humiliate me?

the only reason we keep the ceremony is because of tradition. hazing was tradition also; was it a good one? i don't think so. look into our pasts and see what traditions were really worth keeping. the one where women were not allowed to vote? it was an unnecessary tradition but some fought to keep it. i could keep going but we all get the point. it is an unnecessary tradition to do the girlie things in the ceremonies. men are steadily increasing in numbers in the nursing field so this tradition should change to reflect us equally.

lizz...out of curiosity, how many guys did you have? We currently have 3/55 and I'm waiting to see if the other two made it through 1st semester. It might be a bit of a shock if I walk in the door first day of class and TAH DAH...it's the incredible "token male"! Although I'd have to make sure I'm a least worth a golden dollar.....

Maybe I am the only one, but I really am looking forward to my pinning ceremony. I plan on having my son "pin" me. I will have a black suit on, and I am going to get my son a black suit.

For those that do not like the idea of a pinning ceremony, I hope your school will be understanding that you wish not to participate.

If I would have been allowed to wear a black suit then I would have had no problem with it. I was FORCED to wear a freaking white graduation gown or whatever they wish to call it with a white graduate style hat and a freaking rose pinned on it while carrying a candle---had some stupid slide show and the song was the I believe I can fly CRAPPPPPPP!!!!!!! Was COMPLETLY for the ladies, I was the only male out of 30+ students.:barf01:

To all of the ladies out there that think that is just fine--YOU ARE WRONG!!! It would be like if you had gone to school to be a truck driver and they made you wear coveralls and played heavy metal while the stripper danced.:angryfire

ARRGH...you had to wear the Hat & the freaking ROSE pinned to it with a candle?? I think I'd opt out and magic marker a few designs to it of my own. I don't believe men in my program have to wear the hat, but I know they have to wear the white clinical style uniform....I'm shooting to be a speaker at graduation, because I just want to do the male version of what it means to be a nursing student....of course, I'm sure they'd make me get my speech approved....with good reason. I'm known as a bit of a smart ass, but it's all done respectfully with good humor behind it. Now, if we had strippers, and heavy metal songs...like "Heal Me" and "Cat Scratch Fever"...that might be a more low-key ceremony.

In my school the students control the pinning ceremony. Normally, the ladies wear black dresses and the men wear black suits. Yes there can be lamps and flowers, but I figure I can give the rose to my wife. Later in life, I can give the pin to my son and the lamp to my daughter. I would dread a white gown or our white uniforms!

We actually had eight guys graduate out of a class of 38 so ... quite a few. I think we had the most guys ever in our class.

I thought the guys' video was really great ... and it was a big hit with the audience.

jb2u, this thread follows the idea that the men LIKE the idea of a pinning ceremony, but DISLIKE the idea of a feminized pinning ceremony.

that is 100% correct for me! i don't have a problem with being recognized and pinned. it is all the traditional girlie things that will be going with it that bothers me.:)

Why dont they just get all the graduates to get a tatoo of a big pink uterus right across their arm or calve.

:rotfl:This thread is killing me...i am literally belly laughing. Yall are hilarious.

By the way I am looking forward to the 40 virgins i receive at my pinning ceremony. :w00t:

My friend (another male nurse) said all the girls around him were all planning the ceremony and asked him his opinion and he said that he wasnt going to participate.

One of the girls was upset and said "well what will you have to show for all of you hard work?"

He simply said, "a job.":lol2:

I am 6'2, 265 lbs and built like a linebacker. I thought of showing up at my pinning ceremony in a skirt and long blonde wig and just play along.

I am not sure the wifey will let me though. :lol2:
