Hi Everyone,
I did a search on Phoenix Children's Hospital but there did not seam to be much info available. Does anyone have any knowledge about this hospital? I am particularly interested in their new grad program, work environment and benefits. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

I just finished my peds clinicals there and it was ok. The nurses' there claim management is poor and that seems to be backed up by lots of available positions and traveling nurses. The hospital population is mostly illegal immigrant children and may be a primary reason the hospital isn't doing well financially.
On the good side, they have a great program for anyone wanting to work weekends. I think its called 'baylor' where a nurse can work two 12 hr shifts on Sat and Sun for time and a half giving them a full week's time and benefits.

Hi...I DO work there...full time...like many other places we do have positions available...because of not enough nurses.I had worked there years ago, moved away...and when I moved back to Az...went back to work there, after doing travel assignments at other Hospitals NICU's.Yes,there are management issues...but,I'd still pick PCH over any other place in the Valley. They do have a new Grad program...and pretty good benefits....I dont think HR would mind if you called them and asked them about what was offered..phoenixchildrens.com
Thanks for your replies. I am a new grad and really want to work in peds. I've visited phoneix children's website and they have a new grad ER position available now. Any info about benefits or they're ER would be great!

I work there full-time. If you really want peds, I think PCH is one of the best places in the Valley to work. The new-grad program is very good training.
I feel very supported by my co-workers and manager, and truly enjoy the work I do. If you have other questions about PCH, PM me.

I do not work at PCH but I do volunteer there and it is my work at PCH that has caused me to go into nursing. I love the kids, and yes, we do have a lot of hispanic and native American kids, because PCH is a non profit organization. However, I take exception to Kabin's description of PCH not being financially secure. This was the case in past years (2-3 years ago), however through some better executive management, as well as a huge push from the Foundation, they have done pretty well. They scored very high on the last JACHO exam and there are more benefit ($$) gatherings held for this hospital than any other, except maybe Barrow Neurological Institute. I believe PCH gave away about $30M in health care last year for kids whose families couldn't afford it. There tend to be CPS cases there as well, not surprising since it is a 'Children's Hospital'. Amazing oncology, neurology and cardiology there.

Also check out St. Jospehs Medical Center. I don't work there yet but I do know they have children's floors as well as adults!
My PCH experience was only a snapshot but I walked away knowing the nurses love the kids but complain about PCH pay, benefits, and management. Hopefully it was an extreme, but during one shift change at one pod 4 out of 6 or so nurses were quitting in the next few weeks. Another nurse I know loves peds but refuses to work at PCH.
Here's some interesting financial info about PCH. Since 2003, PCH reduced staff while substantially increased the #hospital visits, ER visits, and surgeries. While I was there the patient to nurse ratios seemed fine.
