Phlebotomy training before nursing school?

Published

Hey all :)

I have to wait about a month for my decision from the nursing programs I have applied to. In the meantime, Ive been wondering if I should take a phlebotomy class and try to score a job in a hospital during the summer.

I was hoping the class would take my mind off of checking the mail/email constantly and give me some clinical experience?

Is this a good idea? And should I keep working as a phlebotomy technician during nursing school?

I don't know how long it takes, how much it costs, and if the job market for phlebotomists is strong? If the answers to those questions are all "reasonable" it is a fine idea. If you worked as a phlebotomy technician in an acute care hospital it would expose you to the hospital environment and you could probably work part time or PRN so you could work while going to school.

The same goes for becoming a CNA, (or MA or PCT). Some nursing programs encourage students to get a CNA license. That would give you more of an idea, and skills, towards working as a RN and you could work part time, PRN, weekends only, etc., around your school schedule.
