phlebotomy course

Well my intentions were to relocate to another state within the next few months and start taking pre-reqs for the nursing program asap.. Something has come up and it seems as though I will not be moving until after christmas or possibly later. I would just take the classes where I am now(at a CC) and transfer them but, the accreditation is different in the two states and will not allow me to transfer credits sadly so I will have to wait until I move. But, I was considering taking a phlebotomy program that will give me a letter of recognition and eligibility to sit to take the test to become certified. Do you think this would be helpful when I go into nursing school? I mean having the phlebotomy training already? I was thinking I could do that and whenever I get to where I intend on going to school at for nursing I could get a job at a doctors office or lab doing blood draws etc while I go to school.

I'm no help. I've actually considered doing the same thing - taking a phlebodomy course to gain a little experience before hand and maybe getting a job while waiting to get into the program.

Hopefully someone will have an answer.

I dont think they do bloods in NS. BUT as a phlebotomist you can get a job in lets say a hospital as a tech or something to that effect. The information you gain while youre there is priceless. Good luck hope this helps

I took this course before nursing school. I took basic and advanced. Unfortunately, I was unable to work in the field because everyone wanted experience, so I found something else. Maybe I should have tried harder and I would have had my foot in the door.

I did, however, find the information very useful during nursing school. I was always more confident than other students when it came to starting IV's even though its a different technique, in some ways its very similar. I was able to use the knowledge in a variety of different areas in lectures and clinicals. It was very inexpensive and I would recommend it.

I'm not in NS yet, but I have taken a phlebotomy course. I really enjoyed and I have been told that it will make me more comfortable doing IVs and sticks. Basically getting you used to poking people:chuckle. I also got a job in the lab that we did our clinicals in right when I was done with the course. I hope this helps!:D

How long was the course you took? Did you take it at a tech school? I have looked into this just to get comfortable with some of the skills, but every course I've looked at was like 12 weeks... which I don't have right now! :)

I am certified, but with how hard it is to find a job, it isnt worth it imo. I worked prn, but there were so many other prn's, I didnt get much time. It also seems that so many nurses are doing draws, that the need is very low. I did love doing it & being in the hospital, though!

Like I said, just my opinion and experience.

I don't remember how long the course was. It has been a few years. I know I took the first part in the summer and the second part in the fall. My best guess would be that, altogether it was at least 12 weeks, but it was only like one day a week. I think I only needed the basic certification, which I think took about two months. The advanced portion offered more experience, but it was still a difficult field to get into anyway. I took the course at a tech-school that offered after school adult programs.
