Hi

I am based in the Philippines and my family and I will migrate to St. Petersburg, Florida in March 2007 where I will work as a nurse. My problem is I am expected to give birth in June 2007 and I am looking for a government hospital in St. Petersburg where hospital costs are cheaper. Can anyone advise me what are the requirements?. My friend advised me that all I need is the green card, proof of residency and SS number. I will be arriving Florida in March 2007 and is it possible to get all these documents before I give birth?

Can you give us a bit more information on how you are migrating to the USA in march? If going with tourist visa and hoping for AOS that may be hard with the problem of retrogression. You will also need to apply with the state BON and if hoping to go as a RN then you will not be able to get everything done by March 07. Read the sticky at the top of this forum titled Primer to work in the USA.

If migrating in March, 2007, that means with a green card.

Now to the rest of the pressing issue. Government hospitals are not like the govt facilities that you are used to at home. The charges are very similar to what the private facilities charge, especially since you will have a job. And will not be unemployed.

You may want to check out the birthing centers in your area, you may find rates a little less.............but all in all, the charges will be similar. You can also try contactign some hospitals in the area where you will be and see what type of packages that they offer. The hospital where you will be working, if they have maternity, usually has discounts for employees. But another thing to check out is that since you will be six months pregnant or som when you arrive here, depending on the type of insurance that you get from work, you may not be covered at all for the pregnancy since it will be a pre-existing condition. The only way around that is to select an HMO type policy if that is available to you. Then you may be covered.
