How do you prepare Phenergan for IV push? Grushenka

Specializes in Med-Surg.

I dilute it with about 10 cc's of normal saline. Make sure if you're not using a central line, you make sure there's a good blood return as it's not recommended to be given IVP and give it over more than two minutes, never more than 25 mg. There are nurses who refuse to give it IV push because it's a vessicant. I've been giving it IV push for many years without any complications...yet.

Just as Tweety said...

only dilute it, don't delete it ;)

opps.....I fixed the typo. Thanks. :rotfl:

I also dilute it in at least 10 cc and give it very slowly. If the patient has running fluids, and most do who need phenergan, I give it slowly in the port farthest from the patient and still give it slowly. I don't have any complaints of burning that way. I have seen nurses give an undiluted rapid push. How cruel and stupid!

I traveled last year to a hospital where phenergan IV was only given in PACU and ER and then had to be mixed in 50 cc NS bag and given over 15 minutes. Most docs stopped using it all together. We used reglan, zofran, benadryl, etc. and had good results.

Phenergan is a great drug when used and given properly.
