Phasing out CNS

Published

Is it true that the CNS degree is being phased out? It is attractive to me because it is 1) one of the four established APRN roles, 2) a clinical-based MSN and 3) one can practice as an NP in certain states with additional certification. A PMHCNS that I work with in acute inpatient psych told me "CNS is being phased out, don't get that degree." If anyone can please help me learn the validity of this, I'd appreciate it. Also, am I correct in my 3 bullets above? Thanks!

What credentialing body handles Neonatal CNS?

ANCC only offers the following:

ANCC Certification Center

Specializes in CVICU, CCU, Heart Transplant.

I just stumbled upon this post. As a nurse manager in CT surgery, I have worked with the most amazing group of Clinical Nurse Specialists. I can speak for the ICU-- this is such an important role. Healthcare keeps stretching and divesting in Nurse Educators and CNS's. The status of our healthcare system is really sad when we don't value this VERY important role.

What is the status of the CNS role currently in 2021-2022?

I've been an adult CNS since 2006 and peds CNS since 2011. I am employed strictly as an APRN who sees pts and bills for my services. That is the role that has survived in my area.
