personal care community??

Published

Does anyone know of or have any info on running a personal care village? My idea is to obtain some land and have mobile homes brought in (either their own, or to rent) to form a community. I would go around and make my nurses rounds(setting up meds, giving diabetic care, assessments, etc) and have employees to assist with groceries, dr visits, personal care, etc. Basicly, it would be like having a bunch of grandparents in one place to handle all of their needs. I've just kinda had the idea, but haven't done ANY research. I'm not sure if it could be just private payor not (to prevent all the paperwork and legalities that goes along with Medicare). What would the rules be about Doctors orders? Would I have to run it like a Home Health Agency in order to do bloodwork ( for those who need it monthly say, for liver profiles due to meds, etc)? Does anyone have a business like this? What kind of paperwork would it involve?I would appreciates any and all input.

Thanks, MYoung , R.N.

I think you would probably have to contact your state. I also think you would have to have some serious . Would you have to be regulated by the state like a nursing home? I suppose it would depend on how you advertised it and what specific services you provided.

The closest thing I have heard to that is a retirement village. People live in their house on campus while they are able, and when they become too disabled to live independently, they move into the nursing home part of the place. The payment was turning over your assets to the facility(mainly the value of your home) and then you would be taken care of for life.

One night while working 3rd shift and were tired and giddy, we had a grand idea of having a cruise ship filled with elderly, like a nursing home on the water....with of course 8ft plexiglass walls around the railings.

I still think it is great idea, but not something I want to sign up for.

First thing to do is contact your state agency that licenses/regulates healthcare services. Every state has one, although they're called different things in different states. Typically, it is a division of the state Dept. of Health and Human Services (or whatever that's called in your state :)), so the state DHHS website would be a good place to start looking for who to contact.

That agency can tell you what the program you want to start would be classified as in your state, whether or not it requires a license (that depends on what services you are going to offer), and what standards/requirements you would have to meet.
