Pep Talk Please

Published

Hi, I'm about to start an Lpn program in about a month but I already am feeling so discouraged, by so many things I bought some of my text books already and when I look at the anatomy and physiology material it's like trying to read Latin or something,i heard from a current student in the program and they said that anatomy and physiology was really hard and was a huge part in all the other subjects. I knew that I would probably have trouble with A/P, we went over it briefly in my Cna class and it was the only quiz I did bad on out of all the other quizzes,I was told by the woman in charge of the program that tutoring is not available. I'm also having transportation issues, I don't drive and my school is about 5 miles away from home, for whatever reason my town stopped running the buses in that area, and cabs are a problem being on time and I don't want to get thrown out for coming in late too much, my only other choice is to walk which I guess is ok if I have no other choice but I don't think I could do that if we have a bad winter. All this stress is keeping me up at night and causing other problems. Does anybody please have some advice or encouraging words, it'd be appreciated.

wow... Is there any way to find out if there is a classmate who would be willing to drive if you help with gas? Otherwise, a bike beats walking and it's cheaper than a car !

Everybody has fears about school... you can also form study groups on your own with your classmates (I did that for RN school- we met every week).

See how it goes before you decide it's too hard :)

Learn how to drive make contqacts the first day of school to see if anyone is willing to car pool also form study groups start reading your book now if u donot understand that book read the chapter from another book or buy anatomy for dummies anatomy cliff notes any such material that has read books that explain to children usually east to understand and build on that knowledge study and know what each organs primary function and all its helpers and know how it works independently and interdependently

If you're 5 miles away, make a friend. I used to pick my friends up all the time before class cause I was driving in from further away. It wasn't a big deal. You'll meet people and you'll all do it together and rely on each other. Don't stress out too much now. You'll be okay!

I believe that the program you are in has computer programs, on all the major subjects that you will need to know such as A/P., Medication Adminstration, and all other subjects. Find out what they have in their nursing lab, and use it to your advantage.

Try to find a ride to school, and make sure you can get a ride to your clinical site. You will have to be there two times a week, starting some time after you have been in school.

Network and see who may be able to help, and in return how you can help them. Wishing you the best of luck.

Check with your adviser about Online Classes. I know my community college offers online for all of the pre-reqs we're required to take before LPN program, as well as some of the classes that are a part of the actual program (but to be honest, for my school, it's very limited online after pre-reqs are through) - make friends! I'm sure since the school is just 5 miles from where you live, you could make a friend who wouldn't mind the extra minutes to come pick you up. Maybe you'll find a friend that lives further than you, and can detour to your house on the way. There's always a way to work things out. Maybe try to get your DL if you haven't already, and see if you can borrow a family member's car for school transportation. Just take a few deep breaths and relax. I wish you the best of luck! :)

I second all of this and would just add:

Last year my A&P book was like another language at first but I just reading it and before I knew it I understood and did great. Go to your local library or school library if they let you use it and study some of the supplemental A&P books. There are many different kinds that are easier to understand. I like to go to Barnes and noble and look up what I'm studying in multiple books there. they usually have ones that have lots of picture, others that have sayings to help you remember, and the for dummies ones that word things more easily. Read/understand them then go back and read the correlating chapter in your A&P book. Since you know A&P isn't your strong suit right now, plan on spending extra time studying it. Good Luck!

Thanks all you guys for your responses, I decided to just try my luck with a taxi in the morning and maybe try to get a very very cheap car for the winter months, I also want to try to find a tutor for A/P if possible, and spend a lot of hours at the library studying and hope for the best.

I don't drive. I have a bike that I commute on:) You could probably find someone to carpool with after a while but biking to school is great. You get a workout which brings more oxygen to your brain so you think more when you study. I would tape some notes and listen to them while riding too.

As for A&P check out your textbooks companion site and use it as a tutor to help cover some of the material before classes start. For anatomy try drawing, it worked for me:) Also if you commute by bike you will be more apt to spend extra time on campus at the library and study groups since you're all ready there.

At first A&P looked like learning a foreign language at first lol...But once you start, you'll have no trouble...Study hard and stay focused...And remember, anything is only has hard as you make it!
