Peircings

Nurses General Nursing

HI I was wondering what every one thought of the idea of peircings in the nursing proffession. I've never really seen a nurse with a facial peircing. I start my clinicals in the fall, and curantly have an eyebrow ring, which i will probly change to a barbell in the summer so that my empoyer (I'm a server in a restorant for the summers) can have their way, (barbells are easier to take in and out, the ball screws on and off, whereas a ring you need plyers)

I only got the peircing for fun, something temperary and harmless to do in first year University, I only want it for a year or two. Just wondering if there are any other nurses out their with facial peircings, and what you do about them while at work. and if anyone has an opinion they feel like adding too.

In case I didn't say it before, real low rent

Oh, poo poo...

Every generation has it's own culture. Even the generations before us X'rs got a bad rap there have always been people who have been "outside" the accepted practices of his/her culture.

Body peircing has been around for a loooooooooooong time. Being that American culture is so new, do you find it strange that while creating our "new" culuture, we borrow from other, more integrated cultures?

I have had my nose done on several occassions, once as a "give away" before my first sons surgery. It was a way of offering up a sacrifice of my own comfort as a prayer for his.

Many people have various reasons for piercing....this is not "low rent", to many it is deeply symbolic to others it is a form of pleasure.

As far as facial piercings in the workplace......retainers are a good thing :)

As far as other piercings are concerned.........hey, if you have them, enjoy them :)

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.... :p

I'm sorry I had to laugh at this response, because it is the same one that I got from my mother over the phone "Real low class, really low class" to be exact, but i never told my fater before I came home, and it took him over 20 minutes to see it and even then it was pointed out.

jaimealmostRM- a "tragus" piercing is when you peice the little lump of cartilage that covers your ear cannal at the front.(it is actually called your tragus) I'm sorry that is not a good description of it...but tried.sorry

I took all facial piercings out during school clinicals. It was required.

I still take all facial piercings out during work. it is required.

nose nape of neck eyebrow and tongue . i have 16 in all.( sorry i don't have a comma button that works on this keyboard)

piercings are fun and they are great. just not appropriate in the professional nursing setting. if you plan on getting more. plan on them being btn. so that way not noticed by patients or mgmt.

let me add that I DO leave my tragus piercing IN. it's never been noticed by admin.......

jaimealmostRN, try this link if you want to see a picture of a tragus piercing. I don't wear a hoop there (or anywhere) I have a small curved barbell. :)

When I first had my navel pierced, (10yrs ago) it kept hitting my jeans. Hurt like H***. Mine took a few months to heal completely & I've loved it ever since!! :)

Im going to be starting nursing school and I was wondering about this too...I have 4 in each ear, 1 in the cartilige in each side, 1 in my tragus, 1 nipple (got it done 2 weeks ago! i think I want another!), 1 navel, and a tattoo...I figured I would probably take out 2 earrings in each ear when I start working though. I love piercings, but I'm running out of places to pierce!!! I work in a hopsital pharmacy now and no one's ever said anything seriously to me, although someone told me the policy is 2 holes per ear only. Oh, and with all my piercings, I'm still freaking out b/c I have to get a PPD test this week and I'm petrified of shots!

Just be careful, and choose piercers carefully! Got called in one weekend to drain a pocket of pus in a woman's breast that was d/t an infected nipple piercing. The infection was VERY painful for her, but it increased her cup by one size on that side! Carry on! :)

I had clinicals in a hospital where one of the surgeons had facial piercings, long bleached hair, and even wore those "Wild Eyez" contact lenses. He had some that were red and orange spirals. It looked awful, so unprofessional. He never followed isolation precautions, either.

A nurse could never get away with looking like this doc did.

Check with your college or university's dresscode for clinicals - my school allowed only one ear piercing in each ear lobe. NO other piercings. Our clinical instructor was fine with those who had two piercings in their lobes but enforced anything beyond that. Tatts had to be covered. We had one student who had to wear a long sleeved shirt under his uniform because he had tattoos on both forearms - they were tasteful, nothing offensive but, this was enforced. Tongue rings and eyebrows rings had to be removed. So, check the dresscode for clinicals at your school. Our's even had a code for the length of necklaces (to prevent confused or violent patients from grabbing them).
