peds home health job - to take or not to take??!

Published

hello all!

I have almost 4 years of nursing experience, all in clinics. I worked in 2 specialty clinics and most recently in a pediatric clinic. Today I was offered a job as a peds home health nurse. It sounds like it would mostly be private duty nursing not multiple home visits per shift. They pay is admittedly pretty pathetic.... but my ultimate goal is to work in PICU. I'm thinking the home health experience would help me get there eventually?? Where I live, the nursing job market is SUPER competitive. I feel like since I've been working in clinics, hospitals look at my resume and say "no way!". If I had experience with trachs, g-tubes etc etc I'm thinking I'd eventually have a better chance of getting an inpatient peds job then maybe someday a job in PICU :) I'm worried I'd feel like an overpaid babysitter sometimes but some experience is better than none, right?...

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Anyone else been in a similar situation? Thanks!!

I wouldn't consider those that work with PEDs cases with trachs and g tubes just any old babysitter. These kids need the expertise that nurses were trained to do. It really does not matter if the child is home or in the hospital. Only a nurse can do what it takes to care for these children, so never see yourself as just a babysitter when you are using your skills as a nurse.

I was hired into a PICU with my PDN experience.
