Pediatric Home Health or Nursing Home?

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hi everyone,

I was offered two different positions at two different facilities and I'm really unsure of which job to take. One job is for Universal Pediatrics as a home health nurse and the other is for a nursing home/rehab facility. I was wondering if anyone had advice for which job might be a better fit for a newly licensed/experienced RN. Also, has anyone been employed by Universal Pediatrics or know much about it as an employer?

Thank you!

Hey everyone,

I just posted somewhere else, but I really need help. I'm a new RN and I'm currently looking for my first job. I was offered both a pediatric home health job and a nursing home job. However, I keep reading that as a new nurse home health/private duty isn't the smartest option because of the risk you take with your license. The job would be working with a child with vent/trach needs. Would this be a bad option for me?

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Yes. New grads shouldn't be working with medically fragile pedi trach vent. The risk is very high. Of anything new grads should start with basic pediatric care such as respiratory monitoring and GT feeds/ meds.

Take the LTC job. You'll learn time management and other valuable skills.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Merged two threads...best wishes with your job opportunities.

While I started in home health at about the same time as I started in a LTC facility, I would recommend that you start in the LTC facility first. It takes a lot to work with the pediatric population when first starting out. It is not to be recommended. You will learn how to handle changes of condition, semi-emergency as well as emergency situations, time management, and get used to "doctor calling" at the facility. This experience will help you to transition into other nursing areas as your confidence grows.
