Pediatric Cardiac Arrest Question

Published

I had a test question in my peds class yesterday which read, " in management of cardiac arrest what should be the first procedure to perform? Possible answers where: A) Establishment of Airway, B)Chest Compressions, C) Defibrillation or D) Administration of IV adrenaline

I chose Chest compressions and I was wrong :|

My roomate- whose account I'm using is not home to help me and I am very confused:uhoh3: because @ my BLS class the instructor taught us to always do chest compressions first and claimed that it was the new AHA standards of CPR. Any help would be appreciated thank you in advance. :redpinkhe

though in reality I'd give a quick check for airway before making myself busy with compressions

I think in reality we'll be doing that for the next twenty years too, lol.

Rember it is a Cardiac arrest. They did not say they where passed out, what where they like. You do not do compresions on a person sitting up having a cardiac arrest telling you their in pain and having a hart attack. In all cases always especialy for peramedics DRABC. Danger ,Respounce Airways, Breathing , then if all else fails compresions and not before the others. There are many cases of lawsuits, becuse some one tried compressions first.:heartbeat

I'm not going to comment on the entirety of your post, just the lawsuit portion. I'm curious how or where you arrived at your conclusion. In my 18yrs of ER nursing I've never read one Journal entry, seen any disciplinary reports or heard by word of mouth of anybody ever getting sued because that started CPR wrong. ABC has been the mantra for so long that now, with the new changes, all of us "old dogs" will still be going to the airway 1st. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

Now, to the OP, as some have stated on here find it in a book and take it to your instructor and show the evidence that supports your reasoning. She may or may not give you the points but at the least you've educated him/her on the new changes. Good luck in your pursuits.

If the person is sitting up and saying they are in pain, they are not in cardiac arrest.
