Pct

Published

So I am a nursing student in Dayton, and I am thinking about getting a job as a part time PCT while I finish school. I have heard from alot of people that it will really help me through school and give me good experience. Any input on that?

Also, I have only had one round of clinicals so far and its in Neuro. I am not really sure what unit I want to work at when I graduate, and so I don't really know what unit to ask for as a PCT either. Any input or tips would be greatly appreciated!

pct is a great way to get your feet wet. i am/was an Er tech(pct with more abilites) throught medic school. working in the medical field while in school brings and entire otehr demension to what you learn and are being taught. .this goes with outsaying in my mind but, there is the book way to do things and there is the "real world" way of doing things make sure you differientiate between the two for school.

as far as jobs this is a good positon to explor where ever your interests. i would go for any ICU experience cuse thats what im about. when i first started in teh er i was all about it, not knowing what to expect. now that ive been there for a few years, ive learned its time management and staying on your game. tahts the kind of **** you can learn from working

good luck

Bolus 24 - How did you handle that job and school?

you will just have to look for something that will fit, as far as one unit being the better it is hard to say. As a Pct any one will be good. Jobs are a plenty I know at my hospital there is a need days or nights. You can PM if you want.

Just FYI Most ICU's don't have PCTs at least not in the network I am in.

I'd say it would be good experience. I work as a dialysis tech currently while going to nursing school (graduating this fall...yeah!).

You may want to look around...sometimes there are PCT positions that just work you on the weekends, so you can have the week to devote to school. Miami Valley Hospital has these positions, but they go quick, from what I hear.

just like anything in emergency med, its all about time management and knowing when to act. knock out a few 12hr shifts on days i didnt have class, clinicals or ride time.

Is anyone a PCT (sometimes called PCA) for Riverside, OSU, Children's in Columbus, Ohio? If you are - how do you like it? Are they willing to work with your school classes and clinicals?

im a tech in Grant's ED, soon to be a medic at Grant after i pass registry.

The peroson who did my schedualing was alos out EMS cordinator who reviews all the medic reports that come in with new pts. She is very pro-education, much less medical education, and worked really hard to give me the days i needed to be in class, ridetime and clincal.

as far as how i like it, it pretty cool. personally i couldnt do anything on a floor... i like the chaos of the ED. Plus you arnt utilized as a medic on the floor. The pay isnt much, but for what you lack in monetary compensation, you make up in education and access to great minds(other medics, rns, docs, respitory therapist, radiologists, pharmacists, etc.)

good luck getting a PCT job in the Dayton area. almost impossible unless you have a connection or have two quarters of clinical experiance.
