pct/lvn/rn dialysis clinic question

I live in ca, and some lvns work as pcts. Why wouldn't they finish & get their rn?

or are they paid a higher wage than a regualer pct?

doesn't matter to me, but just curious!

Wow! 25$ an hour for a PCT. We just had been taken over by DaVita, and I'm only making a little under 23$ and I'm an RN in WI.

I think I would keep the PCT position and forget the RN position. How much does an RN make in CA? Is it worth all the schooling?

I've worked for Fresenius for 6 years, 5 as a CCHT and a little over 1 as an LPN. I'm in RN school right now, but I'm still basically working as a CCHT. I'm not allowed to be the charge nurse, but I can do some things that the CCHTs can't. I do pre and post dialysis assessments. I can give nursing approval to initiate treatment for someone that has complaints. I give injections, TB tests, and medication that isn't IV push. (basically Benadryl and Tylenol) I'm certified to initiate IV piggy pack antibiotics, but the charge nurse does that. For all practical purposes I'm a tech but with some added functions. I love dialysis, so getting my RN is imperative if I want to make more money. As far as I know I make about $2 more than the CCHTs that I work with.

Good luck with dialysis. Its a good field for nursing.

RN's start at $34/hr at the hospital I work for. That is pretty competitive with the surrounding areas and other facilities.

It is just where my path has led me, I guess. I've been a perpetual student; it has taken me about 7 years to finish my pre-reqs. Single mother of 2, only taking classes for 2 majors when they didn't interfere with family time, or when I wasn't working a second job. I can't imagine working anywhere other than where I am now. I really love everyone; patients and staff alike!

wow, single mom and working and class?! go girl!!

yea it sounds like dialysis is really for you. everyone i know says you'll either love it or hate it lol.

the RN's in my area start around $34 an hour too, i live in the sf bay area. where do you live if i may ask? and how much will they pay you in dialysis? more than a clinic like fmc or davita, i'm sure.

i don't know how much a dialysis RN or a certified neph nurse makes but brand new PCT's in my area are paid 16-18 and hour, plus the overtime. i live in the bay area. the closer you get to SF, the higher the wage (and the cost of living) of course. so i get paid my normal wage for 8 hours, and 3 hours are time and a half, so i'm really paid better than my official wage when you average it out.

the nice thing about getting your ADN would be the option to go into management, or go to another area of nursing altogether, i think. but, i'm not a nurse, so just guessing.

i wonder if the LVN's where i work are paid more, as well. i know they give us our hep vaccines.

how long did it take you to cap out at fresenius for your salary as a CCHT, if i may ask?

I'll make start at the new grad wage.. $34. I'll work a year or so somewhere else, but for the same hospital/company, then transfer back to the dialysis clinic. I doubt my wage will increase much, but I'll try. Thats the plan anyway... We'll see how things go. No stinkin' letter yet!
