I've got a BA in history. I'm currently a SRNA (Nurse Aide) and I want to be a military nurse. Will the military pay for my education via a bridge to BSN in exchange for a twenty year commitment as an officer?

Don't think you can commit 20 years up front on a contract. It's usually 36 - 72 months dependent on if you get loan repayment or a bonus. You can get your BSN paid for but it is first come first serve for that if you go to school before you commission. There are some military programs that put you through school first and then once you are done you are AD but I don't know about any of those.

So, once I make the commitment I can choose between loan repayment or a bonus?

It all depends on what is being offered at the time. I had several options available $20000 to loans and $20000 bonus for 6 years. or I chose $30000 bonus for 4 years. there is also $20000 for 3 years.

But be advised that this is subject to change and not a guarantee.

This is a link to the army recruiting website for information on the army paying for your BSN. You need to be within 24 months of graduation, and you get a 5000 bonus at the beginning, a monthly stipend of $1000/month (currently, this number is re-evaluated periodically) while you are going to school, then and additional $5000 when you finish. This is for a four year commitment. I believe they will do a loan re-payment on top of this but not an additional sign-on bonus. However, if you use this for the full 24 months, it ends up being more than the current bonus. This is for the army, other branches most likely have similar programs, you would have to check websites or talk to recruiters to get full details. The name of the program is the army nurse candidate program. Good luck in your studies and what-ever you decide to do!

the more i think about it, the more i want to join the military. i’m thinking army. anyway, i’m trying to think about the obstacles in the way.

first, i’m 29 y.o. with a ba and i work full-time as a nurse aid. i’m not currently in a nursing program (i was but no longer… long story) but am hoping to do a second degree bsn. my

i am trying to think of some question to ask the amedd recruiter.

first, if i’m accepted in a program, and i apply for ancp will i get it? these are the reqs:

- bachelor of science degree must be completed within 6 to 24 months

- passage of the nclex-rn examination is necessary prior to commissioning as an army nurse corps officer

- u.s. citizenship

- prior enlisted army soldiers must have completed all mandatory service obligations and have less than 10 years active federal service at time of commissioning

i meet all those reqs: is that all there is too it? it can’t be that simple. surely they have a gpa requirement right? mine is a 2.8.

but, i’ve heard that if a school has an rotc then i have to go that route, and the ancp route isn’t an option, true?

second, after i finish the program i can either ask for the sign-on bonus or student loan repayment. correct?

i’m hoping to obviously have a conservation with a recruiter and as it progresses more questions will come to mind.

i have read many times on this forum to get everything in writing. so for example, if the recruiter says that i will get the ancp and qualify for student loan repayment, that needs to be in writing signed by the recruiter?

i think i’m gonna discuss my options with a recruiter this week. any feedback from people already serving would be appreciated.
