Hi there, I just stumbled onto your post. I don't know about STL or KC but my husband and I are both nurses and just moved to TX because we made NO money in Springfield, MO! The cost of living seems low, but the low low pay doesn't make up for it. We pay a little bit more here on rent and bills but make a lot more money. Good luck!

I am a nurse in Kansas City, MO and I also have a license in Kansas which is right across the border. I have been a nurse over 4 years with 3 years being ER in a Level I trauma center. I can tell you, I'm looking to travel next year to compact states because I just need a change from this place.

I am born and raised here and the cost of living is very low compared to CA. However, the pay is low as well for nurses compared to CA, but I guess it all evens out due to the low cost of living.

As a new grad, expect to make a base pay of about 21.00/hr plus shift diffs. This is staff. Most of the hospitals here are requiring a BSN for new hires. I also work in a HCA hospital which still takes ADN's. Your best bet is to also get a Kansas license and apply to KU Medical Center. They pay just slightly a little more base pay, but have very good shift diffs.

You need to also take into account the weather. The summers are hot here, today was 101.0 degrees high humidity, no breeze. The winters are just as brutal, ice storms and blizzards. The temp can dip to single digits with wind chills in the negative.

St Louis is approximately 3.5 hours away down 1-70 E and it's a world of difference.

I don't know about a world of difference between STL and KC - we make the same and the weather is just as bad! :)

In Springfield anew graduate makes $17.75 plus $1 extra if you have BSN. Then differential is usually about $3 for night shift.
