I cared for a young woman with paralysis from polio in an iron lung in the 80s. It was an interesting experience.

Wow, what a fascinating person. This is the first I've heard of him and his many achievements.
I can relate to it particularly, as most of my private duty patients are on some type of continuous mechanical ventilation and often want to stick with what they're used to even when the technology improves.
