I had one of those patients recently who seems to think that being a nurse is to be a place where you stop along the way toward becoming a doctor. Of course he does not understand the concept that I chose to become a nurse and not a doctor. Doctors and nurses work together but we have separate philosophies. I tried to tell him that more money does not equal a better job but he does not get it. hmmm.....I am not less because I chose to become a nurse or that I dont want to become a doctor.

Definitely .. definitely not. And just in a general scape and looking at the big picture of things: it doesn't matter WHAT job you have or what profession you hold. So long as you love your job and what you do it doesn't matter what money you make or what title you carry. So I would have to agree with you there, friend.
*Michael.
PS. I would never consider becoming a doctor. I couldnt' possibly dream of paying back the loans they have in the end, ha!

Anybody catch "ER" tonight. Nurse Abby is now Med Student 4th year Abby.......even NBC thinks nurses should become doctors.
Seriously, I think a lot of these folks are just making conversation and nurses and doctors are linked in their minds.

And how did she just "pickup" her sx rotation where she left off. I mean doesn't she have classes to go to?
Also, are students allowed to do sx consults without a doctor supervising. And no, I didn't think calling the doctor on the phone was supervising, but I don't know the rules.
Oh well, I'm sure Abby will be very happy once she's a doctor

When I did my final practicum in my last year of schooling I helped out this one young fella with abd pain. During one of my assessments he said "oh, you're a student" (noted on my name badge) and then said, "how much longer until you're a doctor?"
I chuckled and said that I was in nursing school and would graduate in a month or so with my degree. This fella then thought for a moment and said,
"So, once you go and get your PH.D, then you'll be a doctor?"
I had to straighten that one out. It was funny none the less because he was so serious!

I say this to patients who ask if I plan to "keep going" and become a doctor. "Next time you get pulled over by a cop, ask him if he's gonna KEEP GOING until he's a lawyer"

That was funny.
This is a good one to differentiate our professions... Doctor's treat the disease and Nurses treat the person.
