patient "overload" and employment contract

Published

I am an RN that was sponsored by a nursing home in NJ, I signed a three year contract with the said home, a breach of which will require me to pay a considerable amount. That facility was bought out by a new company, the DON informed me that the new company assumed my contract. One of the supervisors told me to consult people about my contract as this could have been voided since I signed with the previous company and not the current one. I work in the sub acute unit there used to be 2 nurses at night for the 28-30 sub acute patients. However, the new management reduced staffing to just 1 nurse for the sub acute floor. I feel that I am putting my license and the safety of the patients on the line. Is there anyway I can break free of my employment contract on those grounds?

Thank you very much in advanced and more power to you.

OMG that sounds scary. I don't know about the states, but in Canada we have the College of Nurses (who handle our licences) and any time I have a concern re how my practice may affect my liscence I call them. Perhaps you can call your licencing office. Remember, you are liable for your patients safety and will be held responsible if something goes wrong. Good luck.
