has a patient ever physically hurt you during labor

Published

I was just curious how often and to what extent this happens to other labor nurses. I have been hit kicked ,bite, scratched, etc.

most recently had a patient that repeatedly hit me in the shoulderwhile we tried to hold her legs in mcroberts manuever, and right as she pushed the head out she grabbed my deltoid and squeezed and twisted it. left me sore for 2 days and had bruses where each of her fingers dug in.

OMG! This kind of scares me.

I also had one a few days ago that came in complete I put her in bed and while i was trying to help her she sat up grabbed me by the collar pulled me towards her head till i was almost in bed with her. the whole time hubby is trying to get her hand off me telling her let your nurse go so he can help you please! took him and another nurse to get her off of my neck.

I've never been hurt, but I've seen nurses have things thrown at them and one laboring Mom took a run at one nurse who suggested she 'get back into bed'

There's one nurse who seems to get thr brunt of 'violent' pt's, they seem to flock to her. She's been bitten, hit and kicked more than a few times.

What is "McRoberts" ?

Pushing both legs so the knees are flexed as far back as they can be toward the shoulders to make more room for the baby...I recall getting almost hurt by doctors with bad tempers who would throw things. One nearly pinged me with a foot stool and I somehow managed to remain calm enough to inform him that should he hit me with anything he may desire to throw during a temper tantrum, he had better hope he didn't hit me because I had seen his house and knew I would enjoy living there....Never happened again....

This subject ( the one with the pt grabbing hubby in the family jewels AND the thread about the dislocated finger) have reminded me I always tell my patients and their husbands..(or whoever)....Grip thumb to thumb and don't let her hold you by the fingers. Big mistake...One dear man (macho as everything) elected to ignore my advice and was brought to his knees during one particularly intense contraction....We had to pry her fingers off his....I was sure one of them were broken. I have seen that couple back several times since then and it is a joke between us. He tells all his friends and everyone listens to my advice about how to correctly hold the hand of a laboring woman!

When my grandson was being born his Dad & I were on oppisite sides of the bed...both facing my daughter's head, we looped an elbow behind her knee/thigh and she gripped our hands thumb to thumb...when she pushed we had to brace our feet and flex our forearm, she would pull and it would shove her knees up & out...am I describing the same thing? (It left me with a purple hand and sore shoulder and knees-we won't talk about how my back felt)

Yep...Feel like you were run over by a truck? One usually does...Thats why delivery nurses work out at the gym, so they can deal with the workout in delivery...Try to get the mom to pull her own knees as far back as she can ( or have her grasp her thighs and pull back). The harder she pulls them back, it usually seems to help her with the strength of pushing, sort of like a fulcrum....In shoulder dystocia, or a tight fit, this opens up the pelvis just a bit more and gives some more room for the baby...Also, making sure pt was recently straight cathed, or had voided prior to delivery, helps with the room EVERY little bit helps, including coating your glove with either astroglide or castile soap to make the trip down the canal as slippery as possible....

Wow..I am sorry to hear about these "attacks". When I was in labor with my first baby, the only people I LIKED were the nurses..it was my husband I wanted to kill (but I did not injure him in any way)!! LOL
