Pasadena City College RN program

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi,

I've heard that it's not recommended to work while enrolled as a student in an RN program. I'm applying for the Spring Semester at PCC and while I do intend to leave my current employer should I be accepted, I was wondering if there were people who made the attempt to work part-time or possibly in the summer.

Any opinions?

Thanks!

I hope they don't look at overall, my overall is only 3.15. I have As in anatomy, physiology, and microbiology. I have a B in English. I have no Ws or repeats.

According to their brochure, they only look at the above 4 classes and look at any Ws/ repeats for anatomy, physiology, and microbiology.

With that information, they do some scholastic eligibility retention done my the state to decide who gets in and who doesn't. Now what I am curious about is why it seems the grade for English is so important. If you read this whole thread a lot of people got denied, not even became alternates, but denied because their B was in English. Interestingly, if you look later in this thread you see people with mostly Bs in the science pre reqs become alternates or get accepted. That scares me because I would rather have some one with a good science background taking care of me then someone who did poorly in their sciences, (not that a B is poor, just not as good as an A). If you read through his thread you will know what I am talking about. If I get denied and I hear that someone got in with worst grades then I will have some words with their department. Anyway I just really hope that spring will be easier to get into than fall. For most nursing schools it is, and I pray its true for this school. I would at least like to be considered as an alternate if not at all possible. I worked very hard to get where I am now and I would just like to be given a fair chance at getting in just like everyone else, regardless of my grade in a stupid English 101 class.

This was taken from the PCC's brochure itself. I dont really understand what they do...very vague....

Here is the link I got in from:

http://www.pasadena.edu/divisions/health-sciences/rn/Registered_Nursing_Information_Brochure.pdf

Students are chosen based on the results of a statewide retention study done by the California

Community College Chancellor’s Office. In this process, students will be admitted to the

program based on scholastic eligibility. Scholastic eligibility is determined by calculating a

student’s probability of successfully completing the Associate Degree Nursing (A.D.N.) Program

using the following criteria:

™ Prerequisite Grade Point Average in English 1A, Microbiology 2, Physiology and

Anatomy.

™ Number of repetitions (including “W”s) in science prerequisite courses.

Note: The math requirement of prealgebra must be met in order to qualify for selectio

yeah thats why i am freaking out! cause of the previous posts! a lot of them didn't get in! But i have all A's in those four classes BUT when i first started college i took anatomy and then dropped it with a W! so im a little scared about that! Especially because i was 18 when that happened! Now im 23 and im hoping that doesn't make a huge difference on whether or not i get accepted!

thats seems ridiculous to not be accepted because of a B in english! I could have sworn it was more important to do well in the other pre reqs. But my overall GPA is around yours!

AHHHH i just want to know already! what are your back up plans? im honestly thinking about west coast just so i can get on with the program! but the only thing with them is they take anyone, and i feel like all the hard work i put in before means nothing and someone who doesnt have any good grades can come in and get in!

Wow! So we are both sitting ducks eh? Yea see you were young when you took and dropped a anatomy. I was young when I took English 101. See we were barely adults and didn't know we wanted to be nurses until AFTER those courses. See how this crap bites you in the ass?

I so feel your pain. I too have worked really hard achieving the grades I got for those courses. But PCC is so vague about how thy accept people, I am getting get nervous.

As for west coast, don't go there. I mean if it was like 2005 and the nursing shortage was real then I would say go for it because the job is guaranteed. It's 2011 and a job isn't guaranteed anymore. I would not want to spend $100k for a degree that doesn't come with a job ya know? I mean you have to start paying that loan 6 months AFTER you graduate. What if you are like the thousands of unemployed new grad nurses who haven't found a job for months? Then you pay back those loans with whatever heap work you can find. I just wouldn't do it. As much as I want to start my degree now, I wouldn't pay that much for it. And yes I agree about your hard work meaning nothing if you gym in there.

I would apply to BSN programs as having up. That's what I am doing. If I get denied by PCC then I'm applying to cal state bsn programs for fall 2012

FYI I got all B's in science courses and my only A was in english.

So to the people who are applying next term without straight A's in the core classes, don't lose hope!

As soon as I sent the earlier post. I received the decline email from PCC. I guess you have to have straight A's to get int there. They said they weigh acceptances on the English and 3 sciences GPA. My stats are below and they declined me.

Anatomy: A

Physiology: A

Microbiology: A

English: B

I guess one B is one too many.

HUH?!!?!?!?!??!!?!? How does that happen?!!?!?

English should not weigh that much!!!! Gosh this worries me!!!

That doesn't make any sense!!! :( :( I'm so nervous!!!!!

So we should be expecting an email this week? Ahh im nervous too!

Emails shall come this week hopefully! Cross our finger and toes! Pray to the good Lord we get in!

I am going to be so livid if I get denied after worrying so much about it.

Ok guys, if you get accepted (which you will) and after you jump for joy, post up on here ASAP so the rest of us know to start checking our emails!

I called them and they said they were running late :( :( and closer to the end of November beginning of December!! But I agree everyone should post just so we know when they go out!!

No Freakin way! Omg I was looking forward to hearing this week! It's been like 12 weeks! What's taking so long? I mean at least send the 500+ denials out to clear the way! I bet over 700+ applicants at least! 60 picked for acceptances and +/- 30 for alternates?

Come on! Argh. I wanted to know soon because I am trying to get a healthcare job for CSULA but if I get accepted to Pasadena there is no point in starting a new job when I have to quit in Feb for Pasadena nursing school. I mean I guess I could work it but I don't want to work my first semester. I want to see what its like before I decide to work or not.

Gosh this sucks. When did you call?
