I was looking at the PCC nursing school brochure and it said that upon acceptance of nursing school, they take the grade point average of the required prerequisite courses only. Does this mean that every other class that I took and received a grade for has no effect on their decision to accept me or not? Thank you very much
Congrats to all!!! I also got my acceptance letter yesterday and faxed my acceptance this morning. What is the cost of living out there? I know its exspensive. I live between the by the 210 and 15 freeway. So its not too far, but with traffic and all, it can be a real drag commuting for important exams and clinical hours.
Congrats on everyone getting in for Fall '09! I just got my acceptance letter yesterday as well. Does anyone know when orientation is? I currently reside in Nor Cal and will be moving down around the beginning of August, does anyone have any suggestions as to what area to live in? I want to keep costs down and I know Pasadena is an expensive place to live. Any suggestions would be helpful!
Congrats! I used to commute from the SGV (San Gabriel Valley) area to PCC for a CNA course. Look into Alhambra, Monterey Park, San Gabriel... The cost of living in the area is pretty reasonable. I am in the bay area for my BSN at the moment, and I'd say that, having lived in both areas, you would not find the SGV an expensive place to live. :) It took me about 20 minutes to get there in the morning, via sidestreets. Good luck in finding a place!
Congrats to those that got in!! :) If you don't mind me asking, did you guys all have 4.0s? I had one B in English 1A but I was hoping since I had an A in English 1B that it'd be ok, but I guess not. Has anyone received rejection letters yet? I'm guessing that since I haven't received an acceptance letter that I probably got rejected. Boo
Thanks for posting current situations regarding applying to So-Cal Nursing Programs.
It is certainly giving me hope and encouragement as I take my chem/bio this fall - I don't think I will be ready until Fall 2010. I have to also take a & p before I can seriously start applying.
Please keep posting on your progress.
I too applied at PCC. But I applied in the LVN program. The LVN program is every January (yearly) you can apply for Fall semester. And for the RN program is each semester for the following semester. I got accepted into the program. It is better to complete the prerequisites first before applying rather than apply while your courses are in - progress. So it's much safer than having to be put down on the list of in - progress work rather than be in the list of finished list.
For any of you in the RN program who wants to get into it. If you can't get in. There is private RN program in Long Beach. That one has a requirement for students to enter with a 3.5 g.p.a. Try to look it up on the www.rn.ca.gov address. I can't recall the name of the school. That's if you have exhausted yourself from applying everywhere in any RN program.
My advice to everyone also is - try to get into the RN program - as soon as possible. Those two years goes on by fast. I work in the hospital as an EMT. I seep through other hospital websites by curiousity in the career section. Some hospitals have hiring freezes. Sometimes you have 4 to 12 openings for a postion to apply for. And you have 120 new graduates combined from two RN programs (colleges). What really counts it isn't much of finishing the program (but it's part A of your goal), but advancing pass your semesters by grasping and understanding the information, passing your exams with 75% or better, then passing your NCLEX - RN, but also getting situated in a facility. Then you can look back at the hard work you put in.
I'm not trying to scare anyone here. I'm making a point. What I mean about schools applying for the same position(s)? For example, for the LVN's, there are tons of private vocational nursing schools that teach Vocational Nursing. Some or most hospitals are weaning their way through from having LVN's. Some hospitals still have LVN's. It makes it difficult to apply once you pass your State Boards. Then frustration kicks in.
Unfortunately, for me, personally, I am able to earn decent between an RN and LVN makes in a year. For the others, they're not so fortunate, but I made decision to drop the LVN program and have someone take my place who does it need it. To get in and finish your RN program is your ticket for success. I took a different route.
The only way to get into nursing is through their LVN program. For the RN program, you have to have the English 1A, Anatomy 25 (Anatomy 1) and Physiology 1, Microbiology 1 and the rest of general education classes falls into place. You have a better shot if you completed all the above for the LVN. The LVN is every January until February 20 you can apply. The RN program to apply is every semester. If you maintain a better G.P.A. than 3.5 and you can't get into nursing (RN/LVN). I suggest of applying into a private RN school in Long Beach. It's around 35th. Street and Atlantic Bl., or so. You can click under www.pasadena.edu, click Health Science and click either LVN or RN, and it's going to take you a step by step what classes you need to take.
I left the LVN program at PCC this semester (2nd. day). I withdrew from the program due to untimely reasons. One was the Station Fire. With all the ash in the air lingering from La Canada Flintridge to neighboring cities, I became ill from breathing all the smoke. My doctor was very close of diagnosing me with asthma. I'm going to pursue Respiratory Therapy, instead. I don't know what program you want to pursue. I have all of my prerequisites done for the RT program. I only need to take Physics which will be taken as Physics for Respiratory Care, and not regular Physics. If you need more information just let me know whatever information I can provide for PCC.
