I have an interview coming up next week for a part-time per-diem job...what the heck is that? I know per-diem means as needed. But in a place that normally works 12's does this mean I would work 8's and no more then 24 hours? Or would it still be 12's but only 2 days per week? I wanted to ask her when she called me but didn't want to look stupid.
Don't know if it makes a difference but its in a mental health residental treatment center.

If the facility generally does 12's, why would you think you be working 8's? I think what they mean by part-time per diem is that you would have some scheduled days as any other part timer, but you should expect to be called in when they need someone per diem as well. Frankly, that's just a confusing way to put it since you'd still be considered part time if you're guaranteed to be scheduled certain days... and practically everyone becomes "per diem" when some one calls off or they're short-staffed

Sounds like it means PRN, or "as needed." They might schedule you, or just call you when needed. Ask about it, how else are you supposed to know?

Different facilities define "prn" (or the other similar terms used) differently, so the only way to know exactly what that facility means by "part-time per diem" is to ask that facility. You certainly want to have a clear understanding of what you would be agreeing to before you accept the position. Some facilities requre their prn people to work some specific number of holidays/year, have limits on how much you're allowed to call off before you're automatically "fired," etc. So get all of that explained (preferably in writing) before you make a decision (if you get offered the job). Best wishes!

per diem/prn usually means as needed meaning, they will call you when they need you if they have hours available for you
