Hello all, this is my first post as I am new to this website. I received my B.S. in Health Science (concentration: Informatics) from Stony Brook Univ. last year and I will be starting nursing clinicals this Fall at Long Island Univ. Yay! I'm excited, however I currently work part time weekends at White Castle lol. I wanted to know if I can maintain this job during clinicals or is there another part time job I could do that would be less stressful during clinicals. I know it is not recommended to work during clinicals but I need to pay my bills. What are some things you all did or are currently doing job wise?

you may have to juggle things but you CAN do it! The other thing is that once you have a semester done, you can be a student nurse assistant...it may pay better! good luck!

Oh yea for now I think it's a great job. Sometimes, if you are in nursing school, you can sort of get sick of talking about healthcare :chuckle or being around other healthcare providers. You can get so overwhelmed w/ all the nursing material - you just need an outlet. So to have a job other than heathcare while in nursing school has its' perks.

It can be stressful (actually, beyond stressful at times) to work and go to school and to add clinicals on top of everything, BUT I've done it for a year and it is absolutely possible. Don't give up. When you get to graduation you will be so proud of yourself for doing it. Good luck!

It is certainly possible! I am the mother of 2 toddlers, work about 25 hours during the semesters (full time when not in session) and I get really good grades! I think it's important to come up with a routine.. Schedule your study times and such so that you are getting in your school work! Best of luck!

Nursing school and working will work if you make it work! I personally worked full time to put myself through school - the secret is to find a job that is flexible, or work several part time jobs that can be scheduled around your classes. I was also told not to work during NS because it would be too much. You just have to get (and stay) organized, manage your time, and stay on top of things. The margin for error while working and going to NS is much smaller, because you have a lot less time to do things over or fix things than others. This decision is a personal one, you will have to be honest with yourself and figure out if you can work and get your school work done on time and fully.
Hope this helps,

I think they all have wonderful advice ) I too have many many people almost get hateful when they know I am going to still work. I only work parttime and I can do homework at work. I work in a hospital already so they are pretty supportive of schooling. But I am getting ready to take the CNA class in September so I can work as a CNA just for the experience. That way when I start school I wont feel like a dummy AND I will already be used to poop and pee and bottoms lol

To work or not work isn't always an option, is it? Could you get a job as a Patient Care Tech (pct)? They pay well, and you will be in a enviroment benefical to your studies. Hitting two birds w/ one stone. I know lot's of students in our program who are pct's. They can do it, so can you!
