Parent rights to school medical records?

In Calif., do parents have the right to have copies of school medical records. Specifically, i'm referring to logs kept in health office for a diabetic student. I can't see any reason why the parent couldn't have copies but am unable to find code that addresses this specifically.

I can't find any district policies specific to this but from what I could google I gathered that it was part of the educational record and therefore not a problem for me to give. This morning I had a principal state not to give it to the parent but I already had. :( I said there was no reason not to but wanted to be sure by asking the experts on here.

Your school may prefer to have a formal request. I consider a parent asking in person an adequate formal request; if the parent is unknown to me I check the Raptor-printed badge name against the name on the EHR account. When I have a parent call me, I ask them to put this in writing in an email to verify that it is the parent. Some schools prefer the parent to fill out a specific piece of paper. If you don't have a policy on which way to go, you could write one...Off the top of my head I think the principal gave you bad advice.

My diabetic orders actually have written on them from the doctor to send them logs every x amount of weeks.

I don't understand what the problem would be? Parents/doctors need that info. I would follow whatever your district policy is - but this doesn't seem like it is a big deal. sounds like the principal just needs to be educated on why this info is valuable to parents/doctors.

Thank you everyone!!! I appreciate your feedback. :)
