Hi everyone!
I am applying to the ADN programs at Palomar and Mira Costa for Fall 2021. I wanted to make this for other students who are also applying! Share any info you'd like.
I know some of us have been trying to figure out why people like MiraCosta more than Palomar...or think it's "better." My husband talked to some of his co-workers who went to Palomar vs MiraCosta and there have also been some students at clinicals. His co-workers who went to Palomar like it. One complained that they felt it was "stricter," than MiraCosta (they'll kick you out over small things supposedly), but that was the only negative. My husband said that there was no difference in new grad ability between either and he can't tell any difference. The current Palomar students he talked to said they liked it. I kind of think the whole idea that "MiraCosta is better" is created by the fact that they have such a small cohort. Their applicants are "better" because they are more competitive but that's not a reflection on how good the program is it's a reflection on how many seats there are so only the most competitive get a spot. At the end of the day we will get our RN at either program. My ONLY concern is Palomar's issue with securing clinical placements, but it sounds like it's resolved...
With COVID-19 cases in California lowering, I have a feeling hospitals will be willing to accept a couple of more schools/students for clinicals. I doubt they would be starting us at Palomar in August if there were absolutely no spots available, or a limited number for half the cohort.
I just got into MCC, but will choose Palomar because it is closer to where I live ?

My friend graduated from Palomar and said it was a great program and a lot of the super super strict teachers retired LOL. She works at scripps and said that they are accepting students again and the only reason hospitals weren't allowing students was because of lack of PPE. I emailed the dean of Palomar's nursing program and asked her about clinical. She said she feels confident that each student will be able to have a clinical spot since she's gotten positive feedback from the sites and last cohort was the first time that they didn't have sites for everyone because it happened during the beginning of the pandemic. I wish there was someone who's currently in the program that could give us feedback.

If that's true, then that's awesome. Hopefully they hold the orientation soon so we can find out more information about the program.
@ctrujillo that is my hope as well and I'm so glad our numbers are lowering! I took my science prerequisites at MCC so I think I got exposed to too much MCC student rumors and anti-palomar nursing propaganda ?. It's comforting to know that you are picking based on location. @kenjiijo thank you for emailing the dean and talking to your friend! Honestly given that info I'm going to put my concerns aside and lean into life as a future Palomar Nursing Student.
