has anyone ever heard of this? the assignment I am on, the hospital only pays for my 12 hour shift. If I have to stay late to finish giving report, I don't get paid for it. Isn't this agains the law? My company paid for the first few weeks but they told me last week that I HAVE to leave on time. When I have 6 patients and I am giving report to 3-4 people and I have to wait for them, it isn't possible. I have been there for 9 weeks and have gotten out on time 5 times. I am not sure what to do about this, especially when I interviewed for another position, they told me the same thing. Is this a new thing? Is it usual to do this?

This is absolutely illegal if you are paid hourly. If you are salaried they can either pay you overtime or give you comp time (people think salaried employees don't qualify for OT, but this is not true). Unfortunately, they can fire you for not following their directions, but they can't not pay you. Do you have a time-clock, are there records of your time? This is one of the main reasons I would never work anywhere that wasn't unionized--medical companies have been getting away with this for years. For your own information, look up the rules on the federal Department of Labor's website, and also your local state's.

hope this helps

Not illegal. I don't get paid OT until 40 hrs. They have been trying to say we dont get it until 80 hrs! So if I work 50 hrs one week, and 30 hrs next-no OT.

That's when I work ICU.

There is nothing new about this. No employer wants to pay for overtime. Write your notes out and leave them if you must leave on time.

This is happening because the hospital is complaining about paying for your ot. Make them take your report first so you get out first.
