Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) BSN 2017-2018

Published

Hi everyone! This is my first post after lurking and reading posts for over a year. My reason for posting now is because I haven't seen anything here about the current application cycle for Pacific Lutheran University's BSN program. It's located in Tacoma, WA!

My application was received by PLU on the very last day of 2016, and they sent me an email 5 days later saying they needed one more LOR and formal admission to the university. I checked in with my instructor again, and she sent the LOR very shortly after. I also got a letter from admissions saying I was admitted with a great academic scholarship just a bit smaller than the Provost. Yay!!

As of right now, I have a 3.93 cumulative GPA, 3.96 college level GPA and 3.975 in the pre-reqs. I'm also a CNA with over 3 years of experience in long-term care. I'm almost done with a pre-nursing direct transfer agreement at Green River: currently taking AP 2, Chem& 121 and two humanities/fine arts electives. In a couple weeks, I'll be registering for Microbiology, Chem&131 and two more electives for Spring quarter to finish up the degree. I guess in the meantime, I'll prepare for the long wait and keep up on my grades.

Has anyone here applied for the 2017-2018 cohort? Feel free to reach out! :)

Hi NC_24,

I also know a few people who have heard back already--do you mind sharing when your friend sent in her application? They received mine right at the end of December but got my recommendation letters early January...so it technically wasn't considered "complete" until then. Other than the SoN asking for winter grades, I haven't heard anything new via email or mail other than responses to my own questions.

And, those seem like good options for applications! May as well throw your name into a few hats. I was thinking of BCC, Highline and GRC (lpn) this round because the rest want microbiology done even before applying.

Best of luck to you! This wait is anxiety-inducing. I hope we hear some good news soon. :)

Hello! I am brand new to this thread but like all of you am sitting on pins and needles waiting for a letter in the mail saying yay or nay!! I sent in my application 2 days before the due date though and by the sounds of it, I may be waiting a while! lets pray that's not the case though!!! good luck and I will be stalking this thread just as much as I am my mail box at this point! lol!

Hi aswedberg, thanks for replying! Best of luck to you! I hope we all get some good news. Now there's really only May and June left to wait if we have to! :)

I attended an info session, and from what I've learned, as long as your application was completed before the deadline (including recommendations and etc.) then you're considered part of the priority group.

I also learned a few more interesting things:

- There were just over 260 applicants for 80 seats. This is less than what I've read on previous years threads which have been closer to 400 applicants. My husband did his quick math and said there's around a 30% chance for competitive applicants right now. I think the number includes applications that don't meet the minimum requirements (don't quote me on this though), and it sounds like there are a good handful of them.

- They review the applications completed before the priority deadline before they can look at the later ones. The small group of people reviewing the application are split in half--the first half reviews it, scores/makes notes and sends it back to the other half for final decisions.

- The average pre-req GPA for admitted students is 3.7 while average cumulative GPA for admitted students is 3.6.

- I'm not sure if I understood her correctly, but I think she said transfer students treat their co-reqs as pre-reqs because the DTA requires all of them to get the degree. Not sure if that means they treat them as pre-reqs as well, but I sure hope so.

- They usually do denials for people who don't meet the minimum requirements early, meaning GPA, completed application or other minimums. Sometimes people receive acceptances early if they're conditional high school students and/or especially competitive and looking at other colleges (which is ironic, because PLU is my first choice, and I said this in my application! Lol) If you're denied later, it's probably because of another reason. They have to get down to the details with so many applicants like proofreading in essays, organization of writing, meeting the word count (250-350 I think), strength of recommendations and of course GPA.

- I was also told that they trickle out letters each month until June and don't do a big group of letters at once. It sounds like most of them are sent out in June, but if you're lucky, you might hear back sooner. The coordinator did say it's important to keep an eye on your mailbox at this point, but I think all of us are already doing this. :)

Anyway, if I remember anything else from the session, I'll share it here. One day at a time everyone!

I'm SO excited!!!!! I got my letter today!!!! Spring 2018 can't come soon enough :D. ... which, btw, I'm just now completing my first quarter LPN at Bates ~ I'll be jumping ship though. SO Happy!!!! Good Luck everyone!

OMG Chilli!!! CONGRATULATIONS, you totally deserve it! :) I'm sure your LPN cohort will miss you.

I know they have a lot on their plates, but considering the number of applications this time around, it's awesome that they got back to you in April instead of June!

Would you mind sharing what your acceptance was like--was it in a regular envelope like the previous years were?

Thank you SO much! Yep ~ regular #10 envelope with PLU logo. It felt thick, but had 4 papers. 1 was the congrats letter, 2 papers (same ~ duplicate) of a paper to officially accept the spot, and 1 course outline. I had totally resigned to completing LPN to bridge over back to TCC for RN. It's a guarantee spot at TCC as they just started a "reverse articulation" program where first year is at Bates and second year for RN is at TCC. I know how it feels to wait & have felt the sting of rejection many times....please keep the faith everyone!!!

You are so welcome! Thank you for the information! I had no idea that Bates and TCC ladder into each other now, definitely something to consider. I wonder if PLU will apply the progress you've already made?

And I understand what you mean about feeling resigned! I just signed up for the TEAS just in case. Hope this isn't too personal, but I'm nervous; I got a 3.6 in AP2 and a 3.8 in Chem121 (plus two 4.0's in electives at least) last quarter. My house flooded and left me going between a hotel and my MIL's house for almost 3 months.. I know that's not an excuse, but my pre/co-req GPA is still about 3.9 and cumulative 3.91...Just going to give as much positive energy to the universe as I can and hope for the best in any case. :)

You guys!!! I received an acceptance letter for Spring 2018 today!!! I am on cloud nine and so incredibly excited!

I already started preparing to apply for other programs and can cancel my seat for the TEAS now, but I'm not sure if it's refundable. Oh well, it's okay! Keep your heads up everyone! I wish you all the best :)

And Chilli, we're going to be in the same cohort!

Eeeeeeek!!!! Congratulations!!!!!!!! I look forward to meeting you! :D

Congrats to everyone that got accepted! Just out of curiosity, I thought that people that get accepted to Spring Cohort, have to be doing their LPN - BSN bridge. Is that not true?

Hi dona14,

Thank you! From what I understand, they tend to place both transfer students and LPNs in the spring, but I think transfer students can be admitted to fall as well (plus we can move forward if a spot opens up). I think part of this is because the pre-reqs, co-reqs and most of the gen-eds are fulfilled with the transfer DTA, and for LPNs, they don't need to take Nursing Competencies I (the only nursing class required for the first semester). At the info session we were told that LPNs who are admitted to one semester actually start the next semester because of this. I hope I have this info correct--you could always email the SoN as well :)

I'm literally just over midway 1st quarter in my 6th week LPN school. When I applied, I wasn't even thinking of Bates. In fact, i was accepted into LPN before I applied to Bates for LPN April 4th...since TCC has started their reverse articulation program. I got a call on a Friday and started the next Monday. I turned in my PLU app in January & no where on there had LPN intentions. Anyways...I hope that clarifies!
