Anyone applying for the Fall 2014 and/or Spring 2015 PLU BSN program? I'm putting my finishing touches on my application this week, and I'm very nervous. Love to exchange advice, encouragement, anxiety, and profiles with other applicants. :)
I will be completing my DTA in Spring at Tacoma Community College and currently have a 3.9 cumulative GPA and 4.0 in prereqs. Unfortunately, I do have a messy past from my first time attending a different college that is definitely coming back to haunt me at this point. Sigh. A family friend tried to ease my concerns by saying that PLU takes a holistic approach in considering applicants and they are most interested in the student you are now. *fingerscrossed* *deepbreaths*
Good luck to everyone! :)
Hello everyone!
I also applied to the PLU SoN for the BSN program for 2014-2015. I sent my application on January 16th, and my GPA is 3.67. I did ok when I first entered college when I was 18, but not great. I found a job and took a year break because I thought I was done with pre-reqs. But a year later I decided to go back to Pierce to finish my DTA pre-nursing degree and came back stronger than ever (4.0s in all classes for 3 quarters). I am desperately hoping the school sees how my grades and determination improves over time, especially after a long break in education. I am really worried this will make or break my application. And I also have my CNA through the state. I will be on here periodically to see if anything new or exciting comes up!
Best of luck to everyone
And so now the agony of waiting begins... It's only been 7 business days since I sent off my SoN application, and I'm already obsessively checking my e-mail just to get the confirmation that it was received. My wife laughed at me and reminded me that the application clearly states not to even pester them until 10 business days after submitting the application...
By the time the actual decisions are mailed out, it may not matter for me as I'll be locked up and sedated...
Sieairbear-
I'm curious--did you get a confirmation e-mail from the SoN indicating receipt of your nursing application, and if so, how long did they take to get back to you? Good luck!

My wife and I attended a BSN info session last year, and Terry Miller the Dean of Nursing was filling in as the presenter (it was quite a treat, by the way... he was fantastic). For what it's worth, he did encourage people to apply, regardless of the priority deadline.

Japerryman- I have not received confirmation from the SON that my application was received either. I do have confirmation from the post office that it was delivered before the deadline though. Do you know if the SON sends everyone confirmations? I don't want to call and bother them, I'm sure they have tons of applications to sort through.
Did you use PLU's school of nursing mission statement of "The School of Nursing at PLU integrates the liberal arts and professional education, and is committed to three areas of responsibility for nursing education: (1) the preparation of baccalaureate nurse generalists for the roles of provider of direct and indirect care, designer, manager and coordinator of that care, and a member of a profession; (2) graduate preparation of professional nurses for the roles of advanced practitioner, advanced generalist, leader, scholar and as a foundation for doctoral studies; and (3) professional development of nurses through continuing educational opportunities. to compare your personal values? It's kind of confusing to me, just want to make sure I'm writing the essay correctly. Like since I'm applying to the BSN program, do I compare my personal values on how I will fill those roles as a provider of direct/indirect care, designer/manager/coordinator of care, etc? Any help is appreciated, just want to make sure I'm writing the correct essays :)
Hi Earlybird!
I'm right there with you with respect to not wanting to pester PLU staff trying to wade through the stack of applications; those folks have a tall order! I don't know if it's their general practice to send everyone confirmations; that said, I noticed that on bottom of page 11 of the 2014-15 SoN application, under "Communication with the School of Nursing," there is a "Do's & don'ts" section. Under the "do" section, one of the bullets indicates to "contact the school of nursing at [email protected] if you have not received an email confirmation of receipt of your application within 10 business days of submitting your application." Further down in the "please don't" section, it goes on to say "(please don't) contact the school of nursing about receipt of your application until at least 10 business days after submitting your application."
As I'm well outside that 10 day "please don't pester us" window, I'm going to go ahead and shoot off an e-mail just requesting that confirmation receipt--though in your case, I think you made a great choice insomuch as getting that confirmation from the post office.
I'll let you know what they say!
Hey there Swimming-
It seems you're struggling a bit where I did as well. Where I currently work, my organization explicitly has our "Mission, Vision, Values" outlined--we have our mission statement, our vision statement, and 10 accompanying values, all clearly defined. Here, it seems that PLU Nursing has taken a bit of a different approach, as the mission statement is clearly broken out, but that the values are embedded within a broader context referred to as the "conceptual framework." I'm gathering from your writing above that you're working from the PLU SoN page: Mission and Conceptual Framework.
In constructing my own essay, it seemed to me that, while connecting with the mission is certainly vital, it was also paramount to grasp the importance of the Conceptual Framework:
"The School of Nursing's Conceptual Frameworks, undergraduate and graduate, are guided by the mission of PLU and the mission of the School of Nursing. PLU seeks to educate students for lives of thoughtful inquiry, service, leadership and care--for other people, for their communities, and the earth. The School of Nursing faculty members fully embrace these concepts and further hold beliefs about nursing, persons, environment, and health which direct the development of programs and guide the educational process.
The curricula emerge from the School's mission and philosophy, the faculty's beliefs and values, and an examination of the current and future trends in nursing. The cornerstone of the frameworks is the metaparadigm of the profession--nursing, person, environment, and health."
I really found the section on PLU and the Metaparadigm of Nursing (same web page, below) to be helpful, as it breaks out Nursing, Person, Environment, Health, & PLU's Undergraduate Conceptual Framework. I think you're on the right track with respect to fulfilling those roles you mention--perhaps it would be good to also discuss the areas outlined (person, environment, etc)?

Not sure if I helped at all or just regurgitated the web page. :-/
I heard back from PLU today regarding the confirmations--it was as early bird suspected... they're sorting through lots of applications now:
James,
We are still in the process of responding to applications. We
received over three hundred applications by the February 1 deadline,
and applications are being responded to in the order received. It may
be as late as March before you get a email confirmation.
Sincerely,
Kristi

I didn't make it under the Jan 31st deadline, but am also applying. Hoping since they do roll over applications, that I might have a chance for the Spring start, but from what I'm reading, I don't have as near as much healthcare experience like the rest of you! Good luck to everyone!
