Own uniforms or hospital scrubs?

I am a neonatal nurse who works in a Special Care Nursery. My job also is to attend all deliveries and c-sections. We now wear hospital scrubs, but the hospital wants to cut costs and have us wear uniforms into work. I would like input from those RNs who have tired this. How will it work when you need to attend an emergency C-section? What if your uniform gets contaminated? Does infection rate go up because of outside germs coming into the unit? Is it ok to wash your uniforms with household wash? Do you wear cover coats at all deliveries? Input needed. thanks Cheri

I am working in Ob this coming clinical rotation and we will be wearing hospital scrubs. I am a tall girl 5'9.5''. I hope they come tall enough for me. Nothing like walking around in ugly green, too short scrubs :rotfl: . Anyone know if the hospital supplies talls?

It's unacceptable (from an infection control standpoint) to wear scrubs in from home, and then into the OR - that includes C-Sections.

Currently I wear my own (to the OR as well)

Doing that at my job would get me written up and/or fired. We do C-sections as well.

We just finished OB in December. I'm, 5'9" and not sure I have a visible torso (all leg). I didn't have a problem with the scrubs being too short..I think it helps that the scrubs were unisex (unisex usually = longer legs).

All I know is that it was exciting as heck to actually blend a little! No huge blue tackle vest! Ahhh.....

Although, be sure to remember to wear the right shoes! I had a day where I was looking real stylish because I forgot to wear the right shoes. I wasn't used to putting on regular clothes in the morning. I had to start putting my clinical shoes right in front of the door the night before!

We have two styles of pants. The drawstring pants have longer legs on them than the elastic band ones.

(I'm 5'10" with 34" legs, and the drawstring ones are long enough for me)

We have to wear our own scrubs with a jacket over it (optional) and the hospital gives us a BIG $16.00 a month uniform allowance! You never know what you may bring in or carry out!:angryfire

I am a 6 foot tall ob nurse and if you find a hospital that furnishes tall scrubs please let me know I would love to work there. My hospital furnishes our scrubs and there are no talls. I wear a size too large pants to get them a little longer. I don't feel so bad when I see some of our docs coming down the hall with their ankles showing as well. :imbar

You'd think if the docs whined about it, the problem would get fixed (and you could sneak into the men's room and get their scrubs to wear)

I would love that! That's almost $200 a year for uniforms. Good deal!

We've done both but currently are wearing our own scrubs from home. When we have sections we put on a sterile gown over our scrubs. Our only function in the section is to assist with the newborn and I have had to circulate in an emergency. I wash my scrubs separately and am very aware of the need for cleanliness and the possibility of infection. Considering the condition of some of the hospital scrubs we use to have I personaly think the scrubs I take home, wash and wear back to work are much cleaner than the ones the hospital use to supply. Not to mention the fact that I am clean, pressed and professional when I leave home.

We do wear hospital scrubs if we get dirty.

We all wear shoes from home don't we? I'm much more concerned with what may be on the bottom of my shoes than what's on my clothes.

Mmmmmmm no.

My work shoes stay at work. The shoes that i wear home are specifically for between work and home. I have a rubber mat on the driver's side of my car that those shoes go on, and i take a Clorox wipe and wipe off the foot pedals after i get out. The shoes are kept in a plastic box right beside my front door and i slip them off before my feet even touch the carpet.
