Overwhelmed

it's all normal... many are for reference. additionally you won't be using all books all of the time and they will accompany you the entire program... the ob, medsurg, psych and peds books will be added later... i hope this cheers you up some!

i think the pda software is fine but you'll still need the books. the pda is not as thorough as the books. in my experience and perhaps it won't apply to yours, we have to write action of medication, nursing interventions (and many more things that the pda might provide) that apply to a specific drug for every drug the assigned patient has before showing up to clinical (you probably won't pass drugs til the next semester). transcribing from book to paper or word processor is easier than from pda. sometimes clinical intructors let you just tag the pages with post its for quick reference. pda is better suited to a working nurse but it can and i did use it during clinical (still had to buy the book though)...

taber's is great for pda.... but i have the book also out of personal choice.... taber's pda software is fine...

nursing diagnosis software - no comment. never had the software nor did i want it.

I had to have many of the same books as you. An that is great if you can get the PDA format of some of them. Also, instead of getting the Publication Manual of the APA, personally, I would invest your money into a computer program that puts papers in APA format instead. I have a program called PERRLA on my computer and write all my papers using it.That has saved me more headaches trying to figure out how to reference stuff. This first semester is overwhelming an seems like a lot, but you do use it throughout the program and not just for the one semester. Good luck!!

i will be attending nyu this coming fall and i my jaw dropped to the floor when i saw the booklist... can anyone that have been thru their first semester (fundamental nursing), esp. ppl that is attending nyu, give some suggestions as to which books are definitely needed?? here's the list:

also, does anyone suggest getting the bold-typed ones in pda version instead of the actual text? anything elses i should get for my pda that will be helpful for the class or clinical??

welcome to nyu! i started sept. 05 and i too was overwhelmed with the booklist. from my experience, you must get all the required books b/c they're part of the lecture and tests material to be covered. your booklist is somewhat different when i started last year. as for the optional books, it is helpful to have them b/c they compliments the lecture. the taber is super useful and almost everybody have one. the fluid and electrolyte book was required when i started, don't know why they're optional now but nevertheless, they're useful for fundamental, patho, and med-surg (next semester).

as you progress further into the program, your booklist will be shorter (usually 1-2 book per class). as for the pda, it is good to have especially in clinicals but they cannot replace textbooks. i have a pda and i use it all the time during clinicals and they're super convience when searching for drugs, lab values, and nursing diagnoses. so yes, i would get the bold types in pda version (i'm so glad i did). later, you can get the nclex practice questions on your pda.

I am not going to NYU, but my school requires 7 books and some optional books as well. I have a PDA and so far I like it. I have Epocrates, Nursing Diagnosis, RNDiseases, Tabers, Washington Manual, Stedmans, RNAssess, RnLabs, and a few more. I know the PDA is not going to replace the books, but it will help reduce the loads that I have to carry in clinical.

thank you all for your replies!!! i feel better yet the same time not because that would mean that i am going to have to buy all the required books since they will be needed thru out the program!!!! ouch....total came out to be around 500 – 600 dollars....

yup they changed the booklist a bit...and thankyou for your advices!! so do u think i should not only get the pda version, but the textbook as well also? as for the drug handbook, how do u think of the lippincott vs. the davis's? how do you like the program so far? i am a bit worried about it since english is my second language; i am just hoping that i can make this thru!! thanks~

I'm sorry if I didn't explain myself clearly before. If you going to get the drug guide, nursing diagnoses, lab values guide, and Taber in PDA version, you don't have to get it in textbook version b/c the information is the same.

I personally like the Davis' drug guide better. If you're not sure which drug guide to get, go to BN and see which I you like better.

NYU's nursing program is not very hard but it's a lot of work and you must spend almost all your free time into the program, especially in your first semester. It get easier as you progress further into the program. Like any other major, there will be classes you like and dislike and I don't regret attending NYU.
