Hi all,
I am looking for some advice, I am in my 2nd year studying on the Advanced Diploma Nursing Studies course (adult branch), and I have an over confident colleague who i spend a great deal of time with in practical sessions whilst in school (university). My problem is my colleague always has a story to tell, doesnt leave room for anyone else to contribute and always has some big life saving story to tell! For example, whenever the colleague goes outside to move his car, he always has to perform CPR on some passer by!
Obviously my other colleagues and I know this may not be true, but my problem is the colleague in question is driving us all mad, makes us feel inadequate and always has to be the centre of attention.
I am not a very confrontational person and was hoping someone could advise me on the best way I could sort this out, as now I am wanting to avoid the colleague, which means I quit my course!
Please help!

Have you said something to your instructors? If all the students feel the same way it is taking away from your education.
Hi WeeBabyRN,
My instructors have already picked up on this and asked the colleague to hold back a little to give us (the others) a chance, but this still doesn't stop him!
I have been to university today for another practical session and once again, he had some big drama or some huge life saving story to tell! I wouldnt mind but it was a moving and handling session! How can moving and handling legislation end up with a story of Cardiac arrest, CPR and COPD????? His version obviously was much more dramatic, but in the interest of saving time, let's just say his story had no relevance what so ever!
HELP! Please xxxx
I ignore these types of people. Just think of all of the time and energy they are wasting on their little make-believe stories! How pathetic. One way to quiet these people is to ask questions...lots of questions and very specific questions. Ask about CPR. Ask them to walk you through the steps. Heck, they are the expert-know-it-all pro...they shouldn't have any problems with the answers.
When they realize that people want to know more about the specifics to care, rather than just some lame save-the-world story, they will soon quiet down.
.....and if they actually do have all the answers and know everything...make this person your friend because they will be an excellent reference source and make your life a lot easier while you are in school.
Yes--This girl has the right answer!!!! Grill him Danno!!! If he is making these stories up he will be short on details and you will be able to expose him for the liar he is--Believe me--HE will be the 1 running away from you--not the other way around. and if he does have all the answers--like the girl said--make him your friend--Now put your detective hat on and start grilling him!! Good Luck!!!
There seems to be someone like this in everyone's nursing class. The one in mine had a very hard time finding a job, although she worked as a UC at a hospital prior to graduation. Her classmates that also worked at the hospital did NOT have an issue getting hired on as nurses...so it seems to me that these people reveal themselves as time goes on, so try and relax and do the best job you know how to do. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Instructors usually have an issue with students who seem to know everything.
What else can you do? Put this person in their place somehow? It would be nice, eh? But it's not realistic. Avoid them as much as you can.
Hi,I just find it hard to believe that someone who is going into the nursing profession can lie to their friends, like he does, and actually believe he is superior to the rest of us all!
How is that a good nurse quality?
He makes me so mad! During practical sessions and discussions, my other colleagues and I are left feeling stupid! Which deep down we know we aren't but yet he insists on making us look that way!
