My program didn't require an otoscope, but I had bought one years earlier for the same problem you're stating. My daughter frequently would complain about her ears so it came in handy for me then. During my pedi rotation though, the clinic (one pediatrician) didn't have wall mounted scopes so my personal one was a lifesaver. It's probably a good tool to have for almost any healthcare professional who has children.

I have an 11 yr old son, who has chronic ear wax. We try to stay on top of it by putting Debrox or something of the sort in his ear on a regular basis. I thought about getting one of the home otoscopes to check his ears, but I didn't know if I will have to buy one for my clinicals. Have any of you had to purchase or use your own?
