Otoscope/opthalmoscope

I want to practice my assessment skills for NP school, so I was looking into buying an otoscope/ophthalmoscope set. Since I am sure many offices already have them, I am not looking to spend a fortune. What is a decent brand to look for?

Thanks!

Better would be to practice in your schools lab space?

If not possible, ask your preceptor to practice with them - they may even have an extra one you could borrow for a while to practice with at home.

I have a set from R.A.Bock that can be purchased off of Amazon. I think I paid ~$150.00 or perhaps a bit less when I started my program. I found it useful to have my own set to practice at home on my family members in addition to the time spent practicing at school and clinical. It is a pretty sturdy set, glad I purchased it compared to the much more expensive options. It is a good quality for your own/ practice set.

I think the reason for purchasing a set is to become familiar with the equipment before you get to the point where you have a preceptor or are in the lab setting for clinical signoffs.

I purchased a similar set to what Cardiac-RN mentioned, I figured I would have it for this, and either sell it to another student when I get done, or I would keep it for a backup if need be at whatever job I decide to go to after school. In either case, it has been well worth the $$ to have it for peace of mind and the ability to improve my skills at my leisure.

My preceptor did the same thing. She allowed me to use it one day and I found it just fine. At the cost, you can't beat having your own set. I have ordered mine.

My classmate bought a WA and it really has good quality. I did not buy one, my clinic has them. I bought a good stethoscope, Littmann Cardio III instead. :)

Excellent choice, but I kind of like the idea of having my own tools when I go in to see the patient...what if the one in the room isn't working or it grew wings and flew out its nest?
