osce ( observational structured clinical examination)

World Registration

Published

Hi,

I am internationally trained nurse from India. I applied for registration as RN in college of nurses of Ontario Oct 2011. They took over a year and finally determined that my education/ experience is not equivalent to those of current graduates of Canadian nursing program. They have asked me to write Observational Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and pass in order to show equivalency. My question is that have anybody else been asked to take OSCE exam and what to expect? Also what does the college consider while evaluating education as other nurses from my college have been given eligibility without fulfilling any other criteria or exam!!

did anyone got their result from the june osce?

hii ,m residing in kithcener, can any bdy tell me any prep course here?

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

It's very unlikely there will be prep courses for OSCE. The assessment relates to how the candidate uses the nursing process to plan, execute and evaluate care, as well as how the candidate will integrate with the Canadian health care system. They're looking at how you would function in the health care work place and will be basing their assessment on the areas where your nursing education didn't meet the standard... therefore it's somewhat individualized. The assessment is accomplished through a short, multiple choice test that examines BASIC nursing knowledge followed by a number of role-playing simulations where the candidate displays their thought processes, skills and nursing knowledge. To prepare, read through the basic competencies expected of entry-level nurses (http://www.cno.org/Global/docs/reg/41037_EntryToPracitic_final.pdf), review current nursing textbooks for current, evidence-based nursing practice and read the Code of Ethics (http://www2.cna-aiic.ca/CNA/documents/pdf/publications/Code_of_Ethics_2008_e.pdf). If you've been working as a registered nurse in another country, much of this will be purely a review. Be aware that CNO does NOT endorse any for-profit course that purports to prepare candidates for ANY testing necessary to become registered nurses.
