Although employers are not permitted (Federal law) to inquire about your family status or childcare situation, this is a huge concern for any employer. If you're in a competitive work environment, I doubt whether your new employer is going to be very tolerant about postponing your start date. One of the 'basics' for any working mother is to always have a reliable backup plan for childcare because unscheduled absences are almost certain to trigger disciplinary actions.

Ok so I accepted am offer for employment and orintation is scheduled. Orintation is almost 4 weeks after my interview. They moved fast in offering me the position, literally the day after I interviewed I had the offer.
Because I had to give my work notice I asked for the later orintation. I may now have to put off mynscheduled orintation due to child care, because of health problems ( cancer dx of my sitters family member who will be going out of state to be with the family member for 6 weeks while she receives treatment).
So will it be frowned upon to put off orintation? The hospital has it every two weeks so it will just be two weeks but in doing so it will be almost 6 weeks post interview.
Thanks os much for any tips.
