Applicants to OCNE 2016-2018

U.S.A. Oregon

Hello everybody! Long time lurker and first time poster on this site. I was hoping to start a thread to see where everybody is at on their points and etc. Some info about myself I suppose: Applied at PCC, MHCC and CCC, I have experience as a CNA and completed all my pre-req's with 3.9 GPA. Feeling pretty good but not when its compared to 800 other applicants! Thought this would be a good way to see if emails were being sent in the next few weeks and waitlist info. Good luck everyone :D

Hey! I applied this year also to CCC, PCC, Mt. Hood, and OHSU! I had a 4.0 everywhere but Mt. Hood because I had a B in Micro. I have 5 years experience as a CNA. No prior degree though and that makes me nervous a little bit because from what I've heard people say on here before was that a good portion of people that get in have a prior degree. I'm so nervous waiting... even though I know we still have a while. Haha. GOOD LUCK!!!

Congrats on the 4.0! I got a B in one of my A and P classes which somehow made me have one point more at PCC than if I had a 4.0. I think I did alright at MHCC since I got points for the early bird application. These next few weeks are going to be nerve wrecking  I haven't really thought about the essays or interview questions. If you have any good links, feel free to share.

I think I ended up with 57 points at CCC, 62 at PCC, and about 58 at Mt. Hood so hopefully that's enough I guess. Haha. I saw a few things on here where people were talking about nursing school essays and interviews. I'm finishing up this term this week and then I'm going to try to find some things online and maybe even practice some essay writing.

I applied to OHSU. Per the OCNE point system I have 49/51 points;

38/40 for GPA (mine is 3.92)

5 points for having the A&P sequence complete

5 points for having all prerequisite coursework complete

1 point for having a previous degree (AAOT)

However, OHSU has specific discretionary points available; of the ones listed I have Chemistry and Microbiology completed, more than 2000 hours of health care experience, but I do not have any credit hours completed at SOU, which is the hosting institution for the OHSU satellite I applied to. I'm taking classes at SOU now, but it wasn't in time to be included in the application this year.

I hate that there isn't really a way (like the other schools) to see how the additional criteria for OHSU is weighted. I applied to the Portland Campus and I had a 4.0, everything complete, a ton of experience as a CNA, and chemistry and micro done. But who knows. I feel like a lot of the people applying all have the same things under their belt. I think that's the most frustrating thing. It all looks good, but everyone else has been working just as hard to look just as good.

Good luck at OHSU guys, I didn't take chem so I don't have any chance at the private schools (nor the $$). I wonder what sort of tie breakers there will be for the programs, since so many people seem to have all the same points and such. Also how did you figure out the points for MHCC? I could not find them anywhere. For PCC I have 65/70 and Clackamas is 54/64 I think.

OHSU only has chem as part of their descretionary points, but I only applied in case for some reason I only got in there. I really don't want that much debt. Lol. Hopefully I have a choice though and thats not the only place i get in. Points for MHCC are on their nursing page under 'program details'. I'm told it comes down to A&P grades and previous degrees for tie breakers but that may not be accurate.

I have the same stats and am also still worried. I am not diverse and I know that's what they are looking for but I am still hoping for an interview!

I don't think it's specifically diversity they are looking for as much as people who value the concept of diversity or have the ability to work with diverse populations. When I went to the mock interview yesterday, the faces were pretty.... homogenized. Oregon in general isn't very diverse.

What was your mock interview like? I wish they had them here. Do you feel more confident now/ was it helpful?

Heh, they had a specific form after that asked those exact questions -- "on a scale of 1-5 how well did you feel this prepared you for interviewing?"

For the first half hour there was a presentation that went over general interview etiquette; dress nice and be aware of non-verbal cues. Don't bring coffee or other drink, chew gum, or have your cell phone on.

Second part was group interviews with a member of SOU's faculty. Each person went separately and was asked six questions which were pretty straightforward and simple -- why do you want to be a nurse? What's your understanding of what nurses do? How do you deal with conflict? What challenges do you see yourself having? Nothing too curveballish or loaded.

It was explained that some of the questions were very similiar if not exactly the ones asked in the actual interview process, and the feedback from the faculty was definitely helpful. I have a good idea of what to add to my answers to make them more complete now.
